Marty Morrissey On The Jason Sherlock Documentary

(Oldest Posts First)

Watched it last night on rte 1. A younger Marty Morrissey was interviewing Sherlock from the Dublin hotel after the 95 final win over Tyrone.

It was utterly cringeworthy.

Firstly, he introduced Sherlock by singing "Ayo, Ayo" before the crowd corrected him that the song was actually "Jayo, Jayo". That was merely embarrassing, but I couldn't believe what Marty said next. "Jason, you're a hard man to pin down for an interview, and if rumours are to be believed, a very expensive man to pin down for an interview". Some of the crowd even started hissing and booing until Sherlock joked "don't worry Marty, you can have this one for free"

Has Marty always been a stirrer? What a thing to say to a lad after he winning an All Ireland final!

Back in 1995 watching The SG night programme live I nearly fell over laughing when Marty said to Jayo was their a girl in his life. Jayo replying 'ah no I wouldn't be like you Marty, you'd have all the girls after you'.

Well you have to remember that Marty once asked Francie Barrett's mother whether he ever beat her up. Imagine the uproar if this was said today...

"God help us. Tell me, Mrs Barrett, you're a Traveller of course. Does your son beat you?"

I remember that. 96 Olympics. I don't think even Alan Partridge would have come up with a question like that.

Did Marty start the interview by saying ''here by the banks of the Lee" ??

That's not a statement. That's a quote from Marty's own mouth. It was famously broadcast live on RTE at the time. I remember it well.

Scroll down near the end. For me political correctness has it's place but there's too much of it about these days. Even Marty has had to be a bit politically correct. I know he's a love him or hate him character. There's a lot of boring people in the media but I like Marty Morrissey, he's good craic and he doesn't give a sh*t.

Yeah, I'm sure he committed another faux pas in an interview with Francie himself but I can't remember the quote. It was like a Fawlty Towers scene.

I think we can forgive Marty. After all, his native Clare had won the hurling All Ireland only two weeks before. Yes he is prone to some gaffes, some big ones. Aren't we all. He also gave us the famous "no cows milked in Clare" line. He is part of what we are, part of our games. I'd miss him if he weren't around :)

Reading that article Joxer, it looks like the actual quote from Marty to Francie's mother was "you never suffered at his hands?"

The "does your son beat you" line looks like the columnist was exaggerating Marty's gaffe for comedic effect.

Marty's prone to bouts of foot-in-mouth but even he wouldn't come out with that one (you'd hope)!

You're spot on! The sentiment is the same though. Marty getting carried away with himself there.
