Players Going To USA

(Oldest Posts First)

Rule 1.10 states that any player receiveing cash for payment would be suspended for 24 weeks or expelled from the association. Do the powers that be think all these players crossing the Atlantic are going to soak up Donald Trumps country of culture. Small clubs and counties are being hammered whilst Croke Park are standing idly by burying their head in the sand.

Honestly, not an argument I'd pick. The lads good enough to get paid over there are the lads who's be making bank if this was a professional sport. Similarly they're the lads who have given up the most for clubs/counties to be skillful enough to make it over there. Let the lads live.

Maybe they are going for the culture...more languages spoken in New York City than anywhere else in the world,or so I once heard.World class art museums,Broadway, architecture, great music scene, massive sports culture with numerous teams in different sports, like Boston or Chicago too I'd say. MSG,world capital for pro boxing for many people and a venue in which I'd the pleasure of seeing U2 play. Maybe they can grab a bite in little Italy,Chinatown or some Irish pub and enjoy themselves and be glad they did it and say "£eck yez" to everybody back home who begrudges them goin in the first place. Money is being doled out by the GAA itself all over Ireland so they'd want to be looking at that before giving out about lads in the US or England receiving money.

Honestly, good luck to them. Increasingly, GAA clubs over here think they own every aspect of a player's life and expect them to hang around for months on end during the summer on the off chance that they might, possibly, maybe, have the odd meaningful match in between county fixtures.

At least in the USA players can work, play their football/hurling and (gulp) enjoy themselves at the same time.

What rule covers payments to managers?

They're young and free, let them off and enjoy themselves. Plenty of time for the rest of their life, settling down, work starting families later.

Clubs/ counties do not have ownership of players. If young lads can get away for the summer and get a few quid out of it the best of luck to them.

Absolutely young and free and enjoy themselves but our rules are this is an amatuar sport so off and enjoy themselves but the rules of the association should be adhered to.As for the managers 100% agree suspend them as well.

Chances are if they are suspended as a result that some of them might not return to the GAA and/or dedicate their time to other sports. It's not an easy one to solve and, as you say, hits some clubs hard, but some of them are hanging around for summers with club games on hold for intercounty championship. The top brass want it both ways.

Think about it. Do you ever see a malnourished Croke Park official.
GAA are happy to use players for free to gain gate revenue , Which in turn fattens their own trips and expenses.
Players are much better respected and looked after stateside. Glad to see young players looking out for themselves
