I don't think Sean Finn who I believe is best corner back in the country should be saying that. Maybe and only my guess he was peed off about Tyrell writing them off early and then Tipp come along and win 4 games in a row unexpectedly I must say and all talk was about Tipp talking us up as usual but no one from Tipp was talking us up and that was seen by the Tipp attendance on Sunday in Gaelic Grounds. Not even I expected a win I always knew Limerick were at least 6 points better than us and we don't have a bench like them nor the calibre of players. We have a different skill set of naturally gifted hurlers whom I don't think are used to these tactical games spraying the ball around like Limerick do with ease. We're still work in progress there and I think we lost the game tactically and physically on Sunday we played right in to Limericks hands and they punished us duly. I do miss the old 15 v 15!!! I think respect is earned and yes while they are a fabulous team I think you need to match the Kilkenny teams of the 06-15 to really earn respect if that's what your after. Galway had an unbelievable panel in 2017 and won league Leinster and all Ireland in 2018 they only backed it up by winning Leinster so if I was Sean Finn I'd be happy to just win games and trophies and don't worry about respect and using it as a motivational tool. A team can be so high and all of a sudden drop off like Galway or even Tipp from 2016. Look at Waterford up there since 2015 playing their style and now they are ranked 5/5 two years in a row in Munster. Kilkenny never asked for nor sought respect in all the years they were on top they were great winners and even better losers very humble. Not saying Finn or the Limerick team are not the same but I think it's a bit too early in this limericks team success to be talking tripe like that. This Limerick team can dominate for 4/5 years with the right attitude. WildPundit (Tipperary) - Posts: 1709 - 02/07/2019 18:33:52 2204458 Link 0 |
I think Sean Finns comment was unnecessary but it was also taken out of context. I read the interview in its entirety and it wasnt asking for plaudits. Of course I agree that respect is earned. If they want the garlands they just have to keep winning. I think people need to lay off Jackie Tyrell aswell. He made a' left field' prediction that Limerick wouldn't be around come the important part of the summer. Hes getting hammered for it every week., not by Linerick people but by his colleagues on RTE and in the media. Limerick people know hes decent guy. bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 02/07/2019 19:20:48 2204482 Link 0 |
Agree Sean Finns comments were taken out of context. But it must be frustrating when you come from a county outside the big 3 and when you win you get a kind of patronising Well Done from the hurling journalist community while they give you the impression that actually you are only a flash in the pan. Limerick like Wexford and Clare and Galway to a lesser extent have been very busy the last decade or more trying to promote and grow the game of hurling in the schools and communities through the efforts of the clubs and volunteer parents and teachers. Even Cork have been for the last few years and they are 1 of the 3 giants. All this effort has been inspired by a team this millenium we will probably never see the likes of again. And Jackie Tyrell was a cornerstone of it. Agree with you 100% that his fellow pundits/journalists should lay off him. The man spoke from a position of considerable experience about how hard it is to win back to back. Especially if you peak too early in a season that has so many games these days. His team often won Liam only playing 4 or 5 championship games. Its like because he was so successful as a player the other pundits/journalists are revelling in him being proved wrong. Which is a little bit pathetic. A kind of jealousy. Anyhow the Limerick lads look like they are here to stay. But then so too did Galway this time last year. These are great times for our national sport......

The issue with regard to Jackie Tyrell was that he did not have Limerick in top three and Clare to win the All-Ireland. fainleog (Limerick) - Posts: 598 - 02/07/2019 23:12:16 2204677 Link 0 |
Albeit Limerick are Munster Champions fair in square but look they lost 2 games and only made a Munster final virtue of Clare beating Cork. I'd say Jackie was thinking he was half right. IMO Limerick planned perfectly and Tipp I think peaked in the first 3 games and when were due a loss I always had a feeling it could be a spectacular one!! It's Tyrell's opinion I don't think he was being disrespectful, Limerick didn't walk to last years all Ireland they'd a good few tight games plus they were poor v Clare so it wasn't a totally ridiculous call from Tyrell to say they weren't top 3, now obviously he's been proved to be completely wrong and he said as much on the Sunday Game, limerick are the real deal and have an age profile that could dominate for the next decade. Very exciting times for limerick hurling. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 03/07/2019 11:01:52 2204796 Link 0 |
haha it seems like only you have "getting over it" to do with your view of Galway. When did a 1 point win ever become a hammering?! This is sport, we had a great 4 year run, 3 finals, 1 semi final. You really have to enjoy these times and trips to croke park as they can vanish in a blink. There wont be any for myself this year but I will enjoy watching on a neutral. I like this Limerick team and they have to be favourites to win it all given their body of work in the last year and a half. Miami305 (Galway) - Posts: 147 - 03/07/2019 11:24:06 2204809 Link 1 |
In fairness Katser goes out of his way to attract answers like this. I am sure I would be right in contending that the vast majority of Limerick and Galway supporters have the height of respect for each other.

Reid, Fennelly, Walter and Padraig Walsh, Lawlor, Delaney, are all big hard men but that wasnt the point I was making. Kilkenny play a hard agressive brand of hurling and always have down through the years. They wont give Cork the time and space that Limerick did on their 1st Championship day out when they looked seriously flat or an already down and out Waterford team did. Im not discounting Cork who on their day can always beat anyone but I dont think for 1 second that its a foregone conclusion that they will beat Kilkenny like some lads on this seem to. If Cork don't up their intensity considerably from their 4 round robin games I think Kilkenny will be facing Limerick end of July.

I know isn't it such rubbish...hammered = 1 point? You should go back and read what the Limerick posters were saying on their own County forums about 2yrs ago reference Galway and how they admired Galway and how great Galway were and if only they could take a leaf out of Galways book..its very amusing!!

Tipp will bounce back and it will be a dream All Ireland Final between Cork v Tipp what a Final that will be. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2193 - 03/07/2019 22:22:39 2205191 Link 0 |
Yes Viking indeed. We have to listen to thunder. If there was any team we were admiring it was Kilkenny of course, like most other counties.

Yeah I agree it's far from a foregone conclusion, sure so was Cork beating Clare in Ennis. Having said that, I hope KK win as I'd feel more confident against them in the semi for some reason.. I also hope someone takes Tipp out before the final. I think if Limerick are beaten this year, it'll be by one of the other munster teams.

If our neighbours beat us, we will congratulate them on their win, as we have always done in those circumstances, wish them well in the All Ireland Final and we wont be carrying a whole block on our shoulder about it eleven months later.

Oh thank God a Limerick person with common sense!!! Absolutely Cork and Tipp are very dangerous opponents in Croke Park the closer they get to a All Ireland Final

Of course Cork or Tipp will be difficult, after all they also come from Munster and like ourselves have won All Irelands in three different centuries. We would expect nothing less than a mighty challenge from either of them.
