Pat Spillane

You have to hand it to the bould Pat. He manages to have a right go at Tyrone no surprise there but gets the big dig in at monaghan also. He is a parody of a pundit surprised RTE still give him the coverage he gets on Gaelic games.

And now you are giving him more oxygen.
Some lads are gas too.

The Ringer wasn't long putting manners on the bould Pat this year.

Sure if Pat was around 100 odd years ago he would have signed the treaty..... :-)

I don't really have a problem with Pat or any other pundit having a go at Tyrone. But what I find laughable is how contradictory and hypocritical they all are.

There must be zero criteria required to be a Gaelic football pundit apart from having played the game at a top level in years gone by.

Pat and Joe were only recently eulogising Tyrone and their new style of play and now they dismissed them completely after one bad game.

The best one is listening to Joe Brolly about Mayo. He is the biggest fan up until they get beat and then he sticks the boot in and personally insults the entire panel. Believe you me, if Mayo or Tyrone get to the All Ireland final this year then he will be talking them up in as my article's as he can.

Pat is actually worse though as he isn't anywhere near as articulate or charismatic as Joe and has actually become quite boring in recent years.

Pat and joe Brolly are as bad as each other it's amazing that RTE still give them their soapboxes I don't know anybody that enjoys listening to them. I don't mind O'Rourke so much but his knowledge of the modern game and tactics is pretty basic, or if he does know it he struggles to get it across

The analysis on Sky is miles and miles ahead

Time has moved on and the GAA public are able to see that the likes of Tomas Ó Sé, Ciarán Whelan and Peter Canavan are much better researched and don't go looking for cheap soundbites. There was a time when I loved the "then" dream team of O'Rourke, Brolly and Spillane. They annoyed me and I enjoyed it as TV cause it wound me up so much. Even when they were wrong, they entertained. Now the bar has been set higher - it's time for a new generation of analysts to take over the live games.

and Marty Morrissey's commentary is awful too. He clearly has little knowledge of players apart from what stats he has in front of him which he trots out ad nausem. He insists on telling us what club the player is from every time. For Ulster games I much prefer the BBC.

Depends on your opinion of what is articulate and charismatic. They're both very intelligent and charismatic in their own way. You don't need to be a barrister to be able to roll your Rs. But Pat is more secure in himself and doesn't have to draw attention to himself to prove how smart he is.

At this stage Brolly is becoming boring, its the same old story with him every weekend. He doesn't like the blanket defence, fair enough but just analyse the game in front of you. Every point he makes refers back to defensive football and how it doesn't work. I was watching a recording of the Donegal and Tyrone game and both himself and Pat were going on about how Tyrone would challenge Dublin with their new attacking brand of football, afterwards they were basically saying Tyrone were naive for going man to man. You just can't win with these guys, they know no more about football than the average supporter. I would agree with other posters that the BBC and Sky analysis is much superior.

Its a joke that the three boys are still there.
I don't know one person who would miss them, they must think the public love them. Well guess what? We don't.
Whelan and Canavan best two in my opinion, by a distance. Also enjoyed JMcG on Sky.
Beating a dead horse however as all three will be there as long as they please..

Cut away the fact it was Pat Spillane who said what he said, he is absolutely spot on. Tyrone and Monaghan are not good enough!

But that's not the point waynoI.

Like I said I don't mind that Pat is righting off Tyrone. He's probably right.

But anybody can make sweeping statements after the fact.

All of these guys are experts until suddenly they are not. I just cant get my head around it. Like why don't they be called out on their hypocritical views and statements live on air? Sometimes they actually flipflop from one point of view at the beginning of a match then change at half time and then change again at full time. Then they act like they are some sort of prophet.

Have to agree, the BBC put on a good show, Marty and Oisin are good at analyzing the game. And Martin McHugh is a good analyst in during the game of what has occured.

And to make it even better, no ads either.

I never thought I'd say it but I now prefer Pat Spillane to Brolly .. at least Pat watches the game and forms an opinion .. Brolly arrives with an agenda and moulds the debate to fit it .. but yes RTE punditry is being embarrassed by both BBC and Sky ... with neither afraid to call it as it is and not putting on yes men like McStay Cooper and co .. and as for Dessie see nothing Dolan co commenting jeees

Doesn't have to draw attention to himself?

Are we talking about the same Pat Spillane?
