Will Provincial Grounds Fire Up The Super 8S?

(Oldest Posts First)

The provincial champions will host the Super 8 first round this year. It's a change from last when the neutral venue round was first. Should the first round in provincial grounds help fire up the Super 8s. The first round last year seemed to have a muted start in Croke Park. When the second round takes place in Croke Park, some teams will be looking at semi-final qualification with a round to spare. Others will be facing elimination after 2 games. It should add to the drama at the neutral venue.

Meath and Kerry will be in opposite groups as the winner of leinster gets roscommon, unless of course cork beat Kerry.

Given that Dublin will win Leinster at a canter, Dublin then face two home games in a row to kick of the super 8s. This is worse than last year as at least they had the slim opportunity of losing in Omagh with reassurance of a third game in Croker which was a dead rubber against Roscommon to qualify.

It is worse on that point but other provincial champions are happy enough to have the home game first. Congress is there if rural county boards want to move Dublin out of Croke Park. To date rural county boards are voting for financial crumbs from the urban table.

Re Dublin that's a fair point but let us imagine a possible scenario where Dublin got Roscommon Mayo and Tyrone in their group and let us imagine again either Mayo or Tyrone caught Dublin and won.

Dublin would then probably best Roscommon BUT would then face a do or die match away from home with everything on the line.

Hard to imagine it coming to pass but that scenario would make for some fireworks if they had to travel to a packed out Omagh with the championship in the balance.

Ps in that scenario Tyrone SHOULD get at least 70% of the tickets. No less.

One major gripe I have is the quick turnaround to semi finals.

One week is not enough of a gap for fans to plan and hurts attendances with costs. Fans will either ditch final quarter final or won't travel to semi final.

No coincidence last years semi final was the worst crowd since Croke Park redevelopment

Yes, there's no point blaming the Dubs. It's not their fault the other county boards wimped out. But the integrity of our competitions are coming into question. Cork will be chilling out in Q4 for a few weeks after you dispose of them this weekend. That's not right either.

I'm not blaming Dublin for that. I am blaming rural county boards.

Yeah Dublin in Croker for a leinster semi that should have been in portlaoise. Then the leinster final which is fair enough. But then playing two out of your 3 super 8 matches in Croker is a joke. So in 5 matches they'll have played there 4 times. It should only be twice.

Roscommon v Tyrone
Donegal v Meath
Kerry v Mayo

The Super 8s started with a whimper in Croke Park last year. It'll be interesting to see if provincial grounds can light a spark.

The neutral phase 2 in Croke Park will have a lot on the line which should make a difference. Some teams will be looking for a second win to secure a semi-final spot. Others will be looking to avoid a second defeat and an early exit.

Dr. Hyde Park, Ballybofey and Killarney brought a great atmosphere to the Super 8s. I'd prefer to be going to Galway for a weekend to see Kerry v Donegal than to be going to Dublin to be honest.
