Yeah he only single handedly won the league in 2018 for a very average Kilkenny team giving multiple exhibition performances including two against your own county (maybe you're the one who hasn't watched much matches) and he was the only reason that Killkenny beat Wexford in Nowlan park, giving a performance that at the time prompted the very same discussions that are ongoing this week about Reid's position among the greats. I won't give an opinion on Reid vs Joe as I am obviously biased, but Reid has been operating at another level to anyone else for years now, and while there may be aspects of the game in which others may possibly be stronger, no-on has him beaten overall. 100% agree on his league performances in 2018 but he was completely anonymous in the cship in 2018, which was his worst cship to date and the stats back that up. 2014, 2015 and YTD 2019 he has been top class and all of those performances together put him as one of the greats. My point however is he isn't a one man team since 2014 like he's being made out to be and his cship performances from 16-18 weren't outrageous or spectacular. For the record he's the best free taker I've seen and frees are vital. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 14/06/2019 20:27:14 2195035 Link 0 |
Also, I think you're being very unfair on the rest of that KK NHL team in 2018. Walter Walsh contributed handsomely from play in every game, outscoring TJ from play in all of them too, I believe. TJ was undoubtedly the player of the league last year but I've yet to see any one man single handedly winning any team sport and you're being very unfair on a young panel to suggest that. So many people on these forums regurgitate word for word what the media say. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 14/06/2019 20:33:48 2195041 Link 0 |
You seem to be basing your assessment of Reid's performances and that of his team mates on scores alone, incidentally, something that someone who hasn't attended the matches in question would be forced to do. Unlike most forwards in the game, scoring is only a small part of what he brings to the table. He is one of the best if not the best in the game to come out of a ruck with a ball, best in the game to make space and scores for others, one of the best at winning the teams own puckouts, wins a huge proportion of Kilkenny's free himself etc, and to say that he was anonymous in the championship is absolute nonsense when the Wexford match that I already referred to was a Championship match where he drove Kilkenny on to overcome a nine point deficit and win the game. Granted he did not consistently scale the same heights in the Championship as the league, but despite being tightly man marked and being part of some very poor team performances, he still he was routinely Kilkenny's best player up front along with Walter Walsh, It bizarre that you have a Tipperary man accusing a Kilkenny poster who is giving his assessment of the performance of a Kilkenny player in matches which he attended of regurgitating "word for word what the media say" Heftydickonem (Kilkenny) - Posts: 175 - 14/06/2019 21:15:55 2195054 Link 0 |
By the way of course it is hyperbole to say he single handedly won the league in 2018 but he came as close to it as possible IMO

Not even close for me , Joe all the way. Would always be biased towards a hurler who plays left hand down over right. facethepuckout (Roscommon) - Posts: 213 - 15/06/2019 00:11:11 2195118 Link 0 |
I agree on almost all your points but the fact of the matter is he wasn't close to an all star in the last 3 seasons. Speaks for itself. Best free taker, best penalty taker and one of best at sidelines around. Also brilliant at winning ball. Every forward is marked tightly tho. He hasn't scaled the heights last few years the media has said he has this week. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 15/06/2019 00:38:08 2195122 Link 0 |

Is Mathew O'Hanlon the best hurler in the country since he has two pockets big enough for both these lads? Seriously under rated hurler outside of Wexford by the way tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 15/06/2019 23:14:22 2195563 Link 0 |
Sadly under rated in Wexford too if you read back our forum. Great player. Spent his youth hanging around with Walter Walsh and Tadg Furlong at school. 2 more man mountains!

He sure did a phenomenal job on TJ yesterday but in a way it was a good opportunity for the other lads to step up, which they did. TJ can't score 15+ every game & seeing a draw considering the lack of big scores or winning lots primary possession was encouraging. Great by both teams. Ref let a lot go but for once I'd say it was pretty even.

Think Id prefer that type of reffing to the whistle happy type. Best performance by a ref in a while. Yes he let things go but at least he did so for both teams.

Agreed on the ref. Prefer it myself, to a point of course.
