I see where there's another season of the show in the works again this year. Surely enough is enough after the way it ended last year. Let sleeping dogs lie. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 1893 - 01/04/2019 13:14:02 2176965 Link 1 |
They should do a hurling one. It might generate more interest amongst players. gaelicgab (USA) - Posts: 878 - 01/04/2019 13:25:41 2176970 Link 0 |
Needs a new format badly. Back in 2004 or whenever season 1 was it was quite conceivable that there were a bunch of players out there who had slipped through the county net or had been away etc and the gap between a very good club player and a county player back then fitness and S&C wise wasn't as large as the absolute cavern it is today. Go to any senior club match these days and you can usually pick the county lads out because they look like international rugby centres and the club lads look like normal athletes. There is no way on earth you can get 15 good club players/former u21 county lads together to take on the likes of Dublin or Kerry today and not get absolutely ate. kazoochka (Galway) - Posts: 343 - 01/04/2019 14:21:24 2176986 Link 0 |
I still enjoyed last year's show despite them barely winning a game and getting hammered by Dublin's 3rd team. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2198 - 01/04/2019 14:24:28 2176988 Link 1 |
Dont think it could work. The gulf in class would be much wider than in football and a hurling underdogs team would require a longer period of intensive training to get them anywhere near being competitive. But what would be interesting would be a documentary on hurling teams from the Ring, Rackard, and Meagher competitions and to follow them over the course of a season or a year. Say Mayo, Sligo, Donegal, Tyrone, Longford hurlers. It would give a bit of exposure to such teams and some recognition, probably see greater dedication to training and interest with the tv cameras present , and make people from within those counties realise if they didnt before, that they have real hurlers within their midst. How about a team from each province? cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 4977 - 01/04/2019 18:11:53 2177055 Link 0 |
That would be well worth a shot, those teams are the real underdogs.

Maybe be a little less ambitious and play the final against the All Ireland Junior club champions. Not wanting to sound too harsh but most senior club sides would destroy them, if last years programme was anything to go by. Llaw_Gyffes (Mayo) - Posts: 1113 - 02/04/2019 00:08:25 2177156 Link 0 |
Maybe they could keep the current format if they are a bit cuter with the calibre of player they try to bring in. Instead of leaving it to chance to what lads will turn up for a trial, the selectors should pick the best club players from their own county and ask other former players who would have a good knowledge of the club scene for the best players in their county. If they could get that calibre of player they might have a chance because it is second and third string county teams they are going up against, although I know these are still strong. I think it'd be better suited to unearth some hurlers from weaker counties and give them a game against a D1 team. The gulf in my class is huge. However, you'd have to use county lads. Still think it would be nice to see the best players who never get to shine as hurling is such an elite quality sport, OGarmaile (Tyrone) - Posts: 248 - 08/04/2019 12:14:26 2178033 Link 0 |

Just enter the Kerry team, they're always the underdog for everyone of their fixtures according to some posters on here :D realdub (Dublin) - Posts: 8571 - 08/04/2019 18:10:02 2178084 Link 4 |
