that's about the best bunch of players in the County. a lot of them were given chances last year in FBD and League but failed to make an impression. A lot of the regulars for the last few years are now well into their thirties and cant see them improving on their performances next year over the last few years. Not looking good overall for any success this year, better to got with a very young team and build them over a few years , a good young one is always going to be better than a good ould one lol.

Thanks for the listing Tommy. It'd be fair to say that it doesn't include too many unfamiliar names. It's a bit like Donegal of 2014 in terms of trying to get one more serious campaign out of more or less the same players following a bad year (by the standards set previously).

I know where you're coming from Culmore, but if there are younger guys who are at the same level as the older ones then I'm sure JH will give them game time if they're in the panel. If they aren't ready yet and so haven't even made the panel, bringing them in at the expense of guys who know what's necessary would be a gamble which might be better deferred. It'd be fair to say we wouldn't be contenders with 7 or 8 under 23s introduced now for at least 3 years. Even most Kerry supporters, who generally expect regardless of the development stage of their team, know that they'll be doing well to win an AI in the next two years, and they have a large number of prospects, never mind the likes of Clifford who has already shown he could be one of the best.

I think we're pretty well stocked with defenders (what's new) and can field a relatively good defence without Boyle, Higgins or Barrett, but for the team to have a chance this year the great hopes of Regan and Loftus will need to be pushing Andy off the team at the other end, and not because he's slowed down. One of Hanley or James Durcan will also need to be putting pressure on Jason Doherty or even one of the teams best footballers Kevin Mc. If we don't see this happening then we know we're not going to see any greater depth than we've had... just reliance on guys who were good enough to win when younger, but with very thin backup. For me it's a case of hoping to be surprised this year rather than any real expectation. I'm sure the players will be seeing it differently.

Is it Tommy Goals Conroy(2013 all Ireland winner)from kiltane or Tommy Conroy u20s last year from the Neale that was shooting the lights out .Both are exceptional players who both deserve a chance of action.

Man of the match, (mid west radio) Fergal Boland looks like the real deal, and the first new natural forward since the departure of Mort. The lads have been putting in very hard training sessions over the Christmas and got tired towards the end yesterday. Leitrim always target the FBD as the only trophy they have any chance of winning, they did very well yesterday and in fairness should have won. Looking forward to the trip to Tuam...

Interesting game this Sunday in Tuam. We were very flat in the second half v Leitrim but it is ore season. I would like to see more young/new players involved like Diskin and Coen up front. Matthew Ruane etc...

I'm Not looking for victory although it would be "nice" to beat Galway...the league and championship are more important. It's about finding players this time of year.

Even with both teams missing a lot of regulars and trying a fair number of new faces this is bound to attract a decent crowd to Tuam. I think Mayo's general lack of vigour at this time of the year makes it likely that Galway will chalk up another win but, as you say Yew, it'd be nice to have one over them, even in the FBD, just to stop the trend. At the same time, it's not likely anyone will lose sleep or hope on the back of the result. It'd be good to see the forwards on show put in a lively performance.

A few Galway posters now fancy that it'll be them or no one to stop the Dubs getting to 5, but there were no real hints of this from last summer. The only thing we might see signs of from this game, but more particularly the league, is if they're evolving out of their overly defensive game plan. Without this and the players being able to become more flexible, they won't be able to put it up to the Dubs, and probably would still be behind Tyrone and in the chasing pack generally. Not sure how they'd do against ourselves in a big summer game since no one knows where we're at or how we'll go. Relegation from Div 1 would be less of a surprise to me than Mayo making the league (or any) final this year, but who knows... it'd be great to be wrong.

Well another defeat to Galway but im not too disappointed as the FBD is about finding out about new players.

Pros: Reape and Diskin up front. Fionn McDonagh has something about him. Harrison done ok at full back while drake at coner back was steady. Boyler looks well up for it, love his attitude. Hennelly's lockouts were good but still prone to loosing he head as we saw him towards the end. Hames McCormack looking good too. We never seem to have trouble producing half backs.

Cons: Allowing a team back into it again and again although that goal was coming we should have been pushing for another score or 2 when 3/4 points up and not trying to play keep ball.

Midfield is a problem and I wouldn't have introduced Keegan or Moran and instead thrown Darren Coen Or Colm Moran In for example.

2 weeks now to the NFL opener v roscommon.

We did very well in the game yesterday.Things that we will improve on before the league.Wr gave the ball away 35 times and our shot selection can improve. We scored 6 from a possible 14.

Pros- Michael Plunkett, James Mc Cormack,James Kelly,Fionn Mc Donagh,Conor Diskin , Fergal Boland (during the two games).Colm Moran is a class act and come the league he will be rating to go.Andy was flying when he came on

Cons- Why was Conor Loftus taken off.He pulled the strings from no 11 and worked very hard .These young lads needs games. No game time for Matthew Ruane who is well good enough as well as Ciaran Treacy who won every single run after the game between all the subs and players who came on.He only got 4 mins against Leitrim.Darren Coen with no game time.

Nice bit of analysis there Bigjm and agree with you about Conor Loftus. I think centre forward seems to be the position he's best suited to. He has good vision and is a good foot passer which suits the present rules. Wasn't bothered about going out on penalties, probably better than having to play the Rossies two weeks in a row. That first league game will be vital to the survival prospects of both teams and Castlebar hasn't been much of a fortress for Mayo since Horan was last in charge. Let's hope that all changes now with his return.

Strong side named for Saturday evening, particularly defence which, apart from Clarke and Barrett, couldn't be more experienced. Plenty of running in midfield you'd expect, and a lot of youth up front. The Rossies look like they're ready for this league and certainly looked well up-to-speed last weekend. Should be a good game and potentially a reasonably open one. Would have liked to see Loftus at centre-forward, but JH has gone with heft rather than deft... we'll see how that works out! A win would be nice, but based on the form we've seen so far from both sides I think it'll be harder earned for us. Too early to hear the Rossie support chanting 'Going down!' and the Mayo support countering 'So are we...', but whoever loses will probably have their work cut out to steer clear of the drop.

Paul Towey another name to add to the list. Brilliant player, who IMO should have being used inside the FF line for the u20s and not CHF. John Gallagher another one who is deadly in front of the post. Not a wing forward. John Timlin another good young forward from Ardnaree. Obviously the lads I named will need the S&C but they all have serious potential. Seen Ryan O Donoghue against Claremorris, his movement is brilliant and he really drives at team's, has great link up play. Hopefully keeps the head down because he'd be a major assest and will get chances with Doherty out. Horan is already putting plans in place for new players so I'd say they'll be starting the S&C program very soon if they haven't already.
