Westmeath champs Clonkill expected to play tomorrow evening, hours after one of their team mates bury a family member with the whole club and parish in mourning and they've to travel to Parnell Park aswell Scandalous. How the hell is this allowed to happen? Disgusting carry on. Awful decision is the face of an awful tragedy. Two Loughlin lads on the clonkill panel have to play only hours after the funeral of an extended family member. I am friendly with people in loughagar (Clonkill parish) and I got to say this is a terrible tragedy. Hurling pales into insignificance as does all sports when you see a beautiful little child lose her life in such circumstances. The game is irrelevant. There's always one. What a fool once again the GAA shooting itself in the foot. What total disrespect to the whole community of Clonkill. If the Dublin champions had any sense they would say no to the fixture. I don't care if Clonkill come out and say they want to play the game. Fact is it shouldn't be left to them .. it should be taken out of their hands and moved to a more fitting date like this weekend. Listening to the comments after the game from the Clonkill team and management, including members of the family, it's clear they wanted the game to go ahead and it actually helped them in some small way to deal with this awful tragedy. The game itself was insignificant as a result, but clearly the occasion and getting everyone together to support them from the wider hurling community was of some help to them. The GAA can be a great organisation in helping families deal with tragedy, as I'm sure many of us have seen first hand around the country. Some of the comments made here are very unfair. If Clonkill wanted the game to go ahead and wanted to use the occasion to bring everyone together, it would be impossible for the Leinster council to refuse them this. I think this thread should be closed. Most of the posts have wrong information in it and some posters are now telling a club what the right way to deal with unimaginable grief is. The decision had to be Clonkills alone and their decision was to play last night. They put in an extraordinary effort in the circumstances and deserve the respect of everyone.
