Westmeath champs Clonkill expected to play tomorrow evening, hours after one of their team mates bury a family member with the whole club and parish in mourning and they've to travel to Parnell Park aswell waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13650 - 05/11/2018 14:56:51 2149669 Link 4 |
Ballyboden could make a stand and refuse to play the fixture as a mark of respect, there is no way this game should be fixed a few hours after a funeral, what planet are these people on.

Leinster Council you have got this seriously wrong, not too late to do the right thing please. MillerX (Meath) - Posts: 1062 - 05/11/2018 15:24:41 2149674 Link 0 |
Awful decision is the face of an awful tragedy. Two Loughlin lads on the clonkill panel have to play only hours after the funeral of an extended family member. dakid (Australia) - Posts: 284 - 05/11/2018 15:25:11 2149676 Link 0 |
Spot on Wayne, no need for the mad panic to play the game tomorrow night. Game needs to be rescheduled. Is there no-one with the required knowledge in Leinster GAA to work out that this would become an issue?

Another PR disaster, next round not till Nov 18th, a little bit of common sense is all that's needed, sadly that & no brains is in abundance in GAA hierarchy. Another most stupid decision, Ted Crilly getting a run for his money with these clowns. Uimhir.a.3. (Galway) - Posts: 409 - 05/11/2018 15:54:24 2149685 Link 0 |
I am friendly with people in loughagar (Clonkill parish) and I got to say this is a terrible tragedy. Hurling pales into insignificance as does all sports when you see a beautiful little child lose her life in such circumstances. The game is irrelevant. Rip.

GAA PR strikes again in regards to setting games etc tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1336 - 05/11/2018 17:00:09 2149699 Link 0 |
There's always one. What a fool once again the GAA shooting itself in the foot. What total disrespect to the whole community of Clonkill. If the Dublin champions had any sense they would say no to the fixture. Has the GAA really gone this far down the road that they can't see the issue here. latouche25 (Meath) - Posts: 520 - 05/11/2018 19:34:13 2149721 Link 0 |
Both Leinster & Ballyboden offered to move the game & Clonkill refused... Sorry to disappoint those just looking a row In_da_ditch (UK) - Posts: 165 - 05/11/2018 20:15:34 2149731 Link 9 |
Sad sad thread and just highlights the negativity around the GAA. Seems it is always open season on the GAA. witnof (Dublin) - Posts: 1604 - 06/11/2018 07:27:52 2149773 Link 2 |
I don't care if Clonkill come out and say they want to play the game. waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13650 - 06/11/2018 11:45:07 2149823 Link 5 |

Listening to the comments after the game from the Clonkill team and management, including members of the family, it's clear they wanted the game to go ahead and it actually helped them in some small way to deal with this awful tragedy. The game itself was insignificant as a result, but clearly the occasion and getting everyone together to support them from the wider hurling community was of some help to them. The GAA can be a great organisation in helping families deal with tragedy, as I'm sure many of us have seen first hand around the country. Some of the comments made here are very unfair. If Clonkill wanted the game to go ahead and wanted to use the occasion to bring everyone together, it would be impossible for the Leinster council to refuse them this. The family are going to need continued support and I'm sure the community of Clonkill will be with them in every way. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2039 - 07/11/2018 09:21:09 2150008 Link 3 |
I think this thread should be closed. Most of the posts have wrong information in it and some posters are now telling a club what the right way to deal with unimaginable grief is. The decision had to be Clonkills alone and their decision was to play last night. They put in an extraordinary effort in the circumstances and deserve the respect of everyone. Well done to Ballyboden on their win and the solidarity they showed in the build up and on the night. Soma (UK) - Posts: 2630 - 07/11/2018 10:28:27 2150026 Link 4 |
Agree fully, most of the commentary here is ill-advised, uneducated, and just wrong. Well done to both Clonkill and Ballyboden on how they handled this siutation. Not alone should the thread be closed, it should be deleted. StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 1732 - 07/11/2018 12:29:56 2150041 Link 2 |
