after what has happened to magheracloone mitchells in monaghan, they have now been left without a club house, it would take years and lots of red tape before gypsum would help them out, should the gaa step in and help them. this is a team that is going to be left without a club ground for the next 2 yrs at least, every club knows how hard it is to keep under age players and a parish team with nowhere to train is going to be very hard on them roadrunner8o (Monaghan) - Posts: 6 - 28/09/2018 01:54:40 2144185 Link 0 |

Without going off topic here it's important to realise what caused this. Mining....yet right wing governments across the globe are quite happy to allow these companies in and do what they wish under the ground. They aren't regulated in the slightest. If you want to help Magheracloone and other Gaa clubs and even your locality in the future and prevent things like this happening do not vote for FF or FG. These lads see the dollar signs when these companies coming in,they don't see the dangers to communities. gotmilk (Fermanagh) - Posts: 4971 - 28/09/2018 10:49:39 2144203 Link 1 |
I think that Magheracloone already sold the land to Gyproc anyway... derekm58 (Monaghan) - Posts: 24 - 28/09/2018 11:38:02 2144206 Link 0 |

Stick to the football as your knowledge of mining is pretty weak I assume you live in a house and if you do I suspect that it is plastered with gypsum. Do you have a car? and if you do, you should understand that there is metal in it. I also assume you own a mobile phone!! Most metals have to be mined unless the ones that are recycled from scrap and most everyday items we use contain elements/ metals which are mined. I expect Magheracloone will hopefully end up with a couple of high quality pitches.

Well to be honest whether they get a new pitch or not is hardly the point! You don't procure a new pitch overnight! GerryD (Monaghan) - Posts: 335 - 28/09/2018 20:14:02 2144282 Link 1 |
They were in negotiations with the mining company about relocating their grounds to a new site. I expect in light of what has happened those negotiations will have fastracked at lightning speed and they will be given everything that they want. I'll be surprised if they haven't been given a fine big field with everything that can be provided at short notice given to them to keep the club going until more permanent facilities are put in place. If not, then I'd expect to hear a club official on Joe Duffy in a few weeks .

no deal was made, they were in talks but magheracloone would not sell unless gypsum had build a new pitch for them, plans had been drawn up, which you can find on their website, but noting was finalised, plus it would take up to two years from getting planing permission to been able to move to a new pitch

You do not always need planning permission (pp) for a pitch, but you need it for a dressing room. You may be able to use temporary units though.

All clubs in Monaghan could donate their share of funds received from JP to Magheracloone as a goodwill gesture of unity to help their fellow GAA members out in their hour of need. Uimhir.a.3. (Galway) - Posts: 409 - 29/09/2018 15:17:31 2144333 Link 0 |
Firstly, fair play to the local clubs including your own fellow county club Meath hill for making their facilities available in such short notice, including today's win over Scotstown Regarding Gyproc, they have admitted recent mining activities to be the cause of the problem. However it would be grossly unfair to suggest they recklessly mined regardless of the local community. As you rightly pointed out the Gypsum was going to be extracted regardless. Gyproc has been fair to the local community, publicly and privately (enough said) in the past. They have made an excellent offer previous to this incident, the finer details of which are currently being negotiated in the community. The issue here is dealing with the immediate disadvantage of having no grounds to train or play in, at the business end of the season. Also to maintain the level of underage development needed with no facilities available. It will take money to meet the immediate facilitiy requirements needed. Also the county board should take into consideration these disadvantages the club now face in the short term, and while not giving them special treatment they should be sympathetic to their plight and proceed accordingly. mhunicean_abu (Monaghan) - Posts: 1042 - 29/09/2018 21:34:50 2144359 Link 1 |
Why restrict it to Monaghan clubs ? I'd love if my club handed over all their alloted money. Our bank account would be no less than this time last week. I know a lot of clubs are hard strapped for cash but if you have a pitch and roof of some description to get changed under you'll get by. How things change. When I was young it was the left wing (in Thatcher's UK) who wanted mining continued no matter what the cost!!

Sorry. Got to disagree with you on this one Tara mines has put many a dinner on the table in Meath and further afield. It has kept families heads above water paid for colleges, weddings , bought homes etc. In a ideal world your sentiments would be right. But places like Tara mines have saved many a working class family. Thousands actually .

Perhaps i'm looking at it from a Northern perspective. Fracking in Fermanagh which Arlene was trying to bully in to the detriment of the many and benefit of the few and the Dalradian stuff up in Greencastle too.

This is very true, what has happened in Monaghan is disastrous for the club and they must be helped, how heartening it is to see many clubs putting the shoulder to the wheel to help Magheracloone in their time of need. I would agree that whatever proposals were on the table previous will most likely be expedited and a bit extra added in, in the mean time whatever Magheracloone need to survive and thrive in the interim should be afforded to them.
