Jayo's Influence On Dublin

(Oldest Posts First)

Just watched Colm Parkinson's interview with Kieran Donaghy on the GAA hour. Donaghy said he can see Jason Sherlock's basketball background influence on how Dublin play and control possession. It reminded him of how basketball teams retained possession before the shot clock was introduced in basketball. I thought Dublin were really measured andcontrilled in Healy Park when Tyrone went up through the gears. Donaghy also said he was coached by a Basketall coach called Joey Boylan and Sherlock played under him too. I found Donaghy's comments really insightful. I used to play a little bit of basketball over the winters to keep fit and it definitely made me a better footballer. There are huge crossovers. The way you time and angle your run and how you take a pass in tight space at speed and under pressure is very similar.

Jayo was brought in primarily to get lads to put the ball in the back of the net , the basket ball influence didn't exactly show its self in Jayos playing career or in this years minor team , history will judge the amount of influence the likes of Jayo , Dunne the boxer have actually had , when players retire we will find out how much on hand exposure these guys had , no doubt the basketball coach that came in has had access and left an imprint

This year in particular I see basketball moved and tactics around shielding the ball and the player in possession etc. Not sure how legal some of it is under football rules but refs seem to be allowing it anyway so it works.

Jason would have fit in to the present team very nicely indeed

Ah yeah, we won't know for sure until the future. Still though, Donaghy is a good basketball player and he sees it in how Dublin play. If they are adopting moves from basketball then fair play to them. They look so well drilled and comfortable in everything they do on the pitch.

I wasn't advocating for a shot clock in this thread. I was just saying how Donaghy sees a basketball style approach in how Dublin deals with blanket defences.

I think it is quite clever and measured by Dublin.

There's no doubting Dublin's tactical and sports science edge. They have left any challengers for dust in that regard.

It's disappointing for the game though that a team that hasn't been in the top two of the natural footballing stakes in any year have gone on to dominate a disappointing decade for the game.

Who are these mysterious "top two naturally footballing" teams that legend keeps going on about? Ok, we can assume he means Kerry as one of them, "naturally", but what's the other one?

The next episode of the Toughest Trade. Can Ciaran Kilkenny cut it as an NBA point guard. You heard it here first ;-)

I don't think so but having met the guy a few times I'll tell you something, a nicer and more focused guy you will never meet. A sound, level headed fella and a smashing footballer with many years in front of him. Not a patch on Steph Curry or Kyrie though.
