Bring Back The Flags

(Oldest Posts First)

Looking back at the All Ireland finals in the 90s on youtube, etc.
the amount of flags at matches back then.incredible.
What happened to this tradition? Why do we see so many less flags at matches now?
Now the old school hats might be no major loss but the flags brought great colour to the grounds and matches.

I think jerseys replaced the flags. Back then, there would be no more than a handful of replica jerseys, now come All-Ireland final time the replica jersey sells like hot cakes!

No thanks, last thing I want at a match is to be sitting behind some idiot blocking my view with a flag

I remember the 2003 semi-final against Armagh was an unbelievable display of colour and flags from both sets of supporters. Even though the result didn't go our way that day it's still one of the most amazing atmospheres I've experienced.

Croke park security will send you to a holding centre for weeks for attempting to bring in a dangerous weapon like that these days

Back in the 80/90's GAA in Dublin was more "niche"
The Hill was massive back then, flags everywhere, a plethora of different songs depending on who we were playing
It was fantastic. Everyone in the Hill back that was a real fan, a true fan. Knew the players, knew their clubs, knew the opposition and knew their weaknesses etc
Too sanitised thee days. Hill16 2018 = Upper Hogan of 1990's!
The last GREAT Hill atmosphere I remember that actually matched the 80's/90's was ironically not in the Hill atall, but the Killinan end in Thurles in 2001
Savage

Remember the massive Arnotts and The Dubs flag that went over 1/4 of the hill at a time nearly! The pre match parade when it got to the Hill and proper flags everywhere.
Nowadays its lads putting things on banners hoping Marty will see it and show it on "d'tele"

Its not even close to being the same anymore

Can see both sides of the debate but there's nothing more unsettling than the top of a bamboo pole dancing about in front of you - inches from your eyes.

Funny you say that, if you read the small print in a match programme it actually says flags with sticks are not permitted within Croke Park! So technically stewards should be confiscating every flag they see outside the ground, but as Shakespeare might say, it's another GAA rule "honoured more in the breach than the observance"

Every day is a learning day. Learning both Shakespeare an Croke Park rules in one go.

Cork were by far the best, Soviet Union flags, US flags, Confederate flags, Japanese rising sun flags (pretty much any national flag that was mainly red or had red on white on it) mixed with the standard Red & white flags. In 1990 final the hill looked the great. The red and white really stood out. Not too many on display now and a lot of these look fairly cr*p, they almost have a corporate look, a bit like the flags handed out to Leinster and Munster Rugby supporters. The old school simple flags with just the 2 county/ club colours one after the other almost had a feel like a national flag for your area.

Yeah the flags were a cool feature, just watch 1999 hurling (it was a terrible game) final there a few weeks ago and seeing all the flags was a great site to see, they used to loads of confederate, japenese, american and Canadian flags,

I was in awe of the 1993 final, I was born 92 so I grew up watching it on video tape, it was something spectacular.

i dont think the confederate flag has a place at a gaa match.i loved the array of flags cork brought but that was one they could have left abhaile.
