Mayo Ladies Walk Out

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Just reading Cora Staunton and nine other players have walked out on Mayo over player welfare issues , county board not making a statement until after champion game at the weekend, very brave move by girls and not one Id think a person of the caliber of Staunton would make lightly, not a lot of details other than that

No and in fairness girls are not speaking out either. I know it is NOT an issue for Mayo girls but the huge demands on girls who are duel players in the likes of Dublin is killing the two games. Girls do not play camogie/football on alternate weekends at Juvenile one plays say Camogie Saturday and then football following day. With adult older girls match days are shocking for duel players. Mondays are Minor football, Tuesday adult camogie, wed adult football, thurs adult camogie imagine a duel playing girl at U18!! Sheer madness. In the Mayo case it must be fairly serious for a mass walk out its club vs county? I guess we will wait and see, but good to see ladies taking control of the issues affecting them and their sports.

It is very hard to comment on something like this when there are no details as to what the welfare issues are. It must be pretty serious all the same to warrant 10 players walking out days before a Championship game. Though the other question on my mind is why have only 10 of the girls in the squad found it necessary to walk out - what about the other 15/20 in the squad - is there a bit of disharmony among the players themselves too? Anyone got the inside scoop as to what is going on?

Hard to know what the precise issues are, given that the ladies' panel seem to be keeping schtum, as are the County Board. But there have been conflicts between those two groups before: at point a few years back the Co. Board almost withdrew the Mayo ladies from the All-Ireland championship, while senior players have previously raised their discontent with some aspects of the setup.

I anticipate the usual snide comments.

Duelling with the county board? That's definitely a player welfare issue alright.

Agreed. It's hard to know what to make of it when stating player welfare issue as that could literally mean anything. It's actually very sad to see this happen and so soon to Championship would make one think it's highly sensitive. It's very hard to walk away from you county days before hand. The mind boggles

I hope the ladies get the attention this deserves.Must be a very serious issue for the players to walk out. With the men out of the championship and Cora Staunton the greatest female player ever (I imagine she would clean many of he male players too) it would be hard to be ignored within mayo

For me Cora is the best Mayo player ever. That's not saying she'd do well in the mens game just that she's the greatest footballer th o ever wear green and red. Maybe she'll bring some team mates to AFL.

Cute move by Cora, book coming out soon, this will get her a few more sales. Sure it's only Cavan they're playing the weekend. All players will be back before they play the Dubs in two weeks.

I believe a statement from manager Peter Leahy will be issued after the Cavan game. Hopefully this will clarify the situation. Funny how players' welfare wasn't a problem until now and seems to be a problem mainly with the Carnacon group. Sounds to me more like a team selection situation that didn't go down well with certain parties, Surely if it was really a welfare issue then it wouldn't be the manager giving the explanation but someone from Mayo Ladies Board.

Looks like it's about two thirds of the team that pulled out.
Doesn't exactly seem like their is unity on this one.
Vote perhaps decided numbers and will be interesting to see how quickly they rejoin panel and what's achieved.

I think you are on the money with your speculation re players from one specific club, I mean if it s a welfare issue its a welfare issue for all players, Strange,

Figures I've seen put it as 10 have left, 28 remain, and 10 of those who started the last championship match are still in the squad.

Firstly, I have no idea whatsoever about what has gone on with the Mayo ladies team. But just asking a GENUINE question:

If this was a mens inter-county team, would they still be labelled/perceived as "brave", or would they be "letting their county down"?

Genuine question

You raise a valid point, IMO the devil is in the detail of which we have none ,if it's to do with the coach , his methods etc etc then no you don't walk , if it's player welfare then that needs explaining and I don't want to speculate and do a disservice to anyone but there are grounds were it could be warranted
The difference between this and the men is we know so little

Wonder why they pulled out? Player power seems to be an issue for Mayo in mens and ladies football, I think it cost Mayo an All Ireland with a goalie change disaster,

I think calling them "brave" needs the explanation to be able to say that. Maybe we will find out later today, I hate player power because it divides counties but what this welfare issue is only they know so nothing can really be said on the matter. But story will come out.

Yes & the selector(s) who left were also from that club. The manager's statement after the Cavan match yesterday claimed that the 'walkout' began with a communication from the Carnacon club secretary.
