Next Down Manager

(Oldest Posts First)

Eamonn Burns has gone after a disappointing three years but with the highlight of impressive run to the Ulster final last year. He deserves credit for having the guts to take the job when hardly anyone else wanted it and I wish him well.

Tony McEntee is being linked but he would be an expensive appointment and the Down county board did not accept his demands the last time the job was vacated. Conor Deegan manages the minors and they have some good players but they lost a 10 point lead against Derry in the Ulster semi final. Could Deegan make the step up??

Deegan managed the U-20s this year not the minors, Wee James has managed the minors for the past 3 years or so and with a proven record would be a better shout than Deegan

Yeah sorry I should have said the under 20s. James McCartan's minor team lost to Monaghan after extra time. Your right could be a good shout but would Down county board give him the job again.
What about Pete McGrath??

The Belfast Telegraph said that Steven Poacher/ Shane Mulholland and Oisin McConville are other candidates. Also mentioned Conleith Gilligan as an outsider.

No cash in the coffers.

It'll be an internal appointment.

Anyone of the 91-94 team not have a go at it yet?

Mickey Linden maybe.

I heard that Deegan had been sounded out for 2019 senior job just before the Cavan match a couple of weeks ago.

He appears to be the cheap option for a county board that seem to be limited to shopping at Lidl/Aldi due to lack of funds and he may well see it as an opportunity to make a name for himself as a manager. However that was a strong U-20 panel he had this year though and the general perception is that it under achieved

Harsh opinion.

Yeah I saw someone wrote on Down county board forum that Deegan has been told the job is his. It would also follow the pattern of giving the job to the heroes of 91 and 94. I was at the match against Derry under 20s before Donegal and Deegan seemed to get his subsitutions wrong. Yet hopefully he could learn from the debacle against Derry.

I had heard poacher was staying with Carlow next year but I'd imagine if the chance to manage his own county came up it would be hard to turn down
