Qualifiers Round 3

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

With Cavan likely to be weakened by the crazy stuff the other evening Tyrone should come through that tie fairly comfortably now. Leitrim were fantastic against Louth, but having already been given a lesson in complacency, Monaghan surely will show up switched on this time... Leitrim deserved a kinder draw. I think Clare are a better all round side than Armagh so still fancy Clare to get the result, even conceding home advantage (with Armagh getting rewarded for being crap in the league). The rule should be two clear divisions between sides before they flip home advantage. Kildare and Mayo... hard to know, with Cian O'Neill having so much knowledge of the Mayo players plus, unlike Tipp, Kildare will be fit enough to stay the course for the full 70+. The home venue thing will be tricky for Kildare as with good home support the attendance could top 20k+. It may have to be moved to Portlaoise or O'Connor Park. Mayo have played most of their qualifiers for the last two years away, so the venue won't be a factor... what will be is the diminishing midfield options that Mayo will be able to deploy against a side with some very good players in that part of the park.

So basically after all the games over the past 2 months we are gonna end up with Super 8s being 7 teams from Division 1 of the league 2019 plus Donegal.

Makes you wonder what exactly is the point of all the provincial stuff anymore.

Replying To SouthMonMan:  "No.. that is a new rule from last year. Neither can Armagh play Fermanagh if they beat Clare.
If Monaghan beat Leitrim, Rd 4 will be tricky. Monaghan would prefer to meat Fermanagh again compared to the other three teams in the pot.
For me, I'd like to avoid Cork and Roscommon. Cork are either Brilliant or Awful so knowing Monaghan's luck they would be brilliant if they played us..! Roscommon are a very good footballing team, there would only be a kick in the ball between them and Monaghan.
After the hammering Laois got, I'd hope Monaghan could take them in Rd4."
Re Monaghan's luck .... our last 5 qualifier draws have been Wexford, Carlow, Down (the revenge game), Waterford, Leitrim. With all respect to the above teams....no county has ever had qualifier luck like that. And the one before that was Longford..... which we managed to lose at home.

Ultimately we lost to Fermanagh because we played like Fermanagh. Dongegal played like Dublin yesterday ... and had it won after 10 mins. No excuses if Mon (with respect to Leitrim) don't beat Cork or Laois if they get them. Roscommon a different prospect .... pretty even. I'm delighted we are getting these kind draws, but we need to finish it off and get to the Super 8s....... no excuses now.

Mon can't get Fermanagh. Neither can Armagh. That would leave Fermanagh playing Mayo/Kildare or Tyrone/ Cavan.... based on Armagh beating Clare...... Not a given

As anyone unfortunate enough to be in Brewster Park on Saturday knows, Tyrone will beat Cavan by atleast 12 points this weekend. In fact, Tyrone could play with 13 players for the entire 70 minutes and still win with a bit to spare!

Monaghan must feel blessed, a good club team would beat Waterford and Leitrim.

I must say, It's great for us (Leitrim) to be playing a fourth championship match in 2018, if anything this is going to bring on the team in many ways. Pundits talk about the weaker sides being at a disadvantage for me it's all for the wrong reasons, the biggest reason we weaker sides are disadvataged is the usually over play two games in the champion and their season is over in June when the stronger teams are now going to be playing more competitive games right into August and the gap will widen.

It would have been nice to got some type of break with the draw this morning, after Monaghan's victory against Tyrone the talk was they are serious contenders for ye All Ireland, they have time now to refocus and the bookies odds tell the story. Anyway, great for our young team and the county to be mixing it with the big boys in the last sixteen.

Hardly a surprise that the stronger teams beat the weaker teams. There's nothing wrong with that. Federer and Nadal don't get a free pass to the quarter finals. They play the early rounds against weaker opponents almost always winning but sometimes there is an upset. Sometimes there is an upset in the GAA too. There is a hierarchy in all sports. Don't know why GAA fans expect anything different.

IF we beat Leitrim....we can indeed play Fermanagh again should that be the draw.

Not sure why anyone's upset. The rules were clear enough. First team out has home advantage except if it's Cavan and they have no pitch or except if it's Clare and they're too strong for Armagh or except if it's Kildare and Mayo have a lot of supporters.

The only one in the balance is Armagh v Clare tie but given that Armagh have been given home advantage I should think that will swing it in their favour. Roscommon are a good outfit though so it would be a tight game between themselves and Armagh. I would definitely take the other 3 (Mayo,Monaghan and Tyrone to beat any of the provincial runners-up though."
Roscommon are by far the best of the beaten finalists and stand a good chance of reaching Super 8s

The GAA say it was decided after a morning of discussions- as soon as the draw was made I strongly suspected it would happen. It's very unfair on Kildare, total disregard for that county.

Well, I'm going for Monaghan, Armagh, Tyrone( but only just about) and Kildare(after everything going against them if they have any pride in themselves and their jersey....they will never get a better chance to ambush Mayo! also they need that lad D. Flynn to be at his best)

The beaten provincial finalists are unusually weak.Three of them were hammered in their Provincial Final. The winners of today's games will fancy their chances.Roscommon can get to the super 8s but they'll have to play a lot better than in the Connacht Final. You won't win many games not scoring from play for an entire half of football.
