Could Tom Parsons Actual Analysis Make The Sunday Game Relevant For Football Supporters Again

(Oldest Posts First)

I wonder what others think
Tom gave a great analysis on how Galway won last Sunday i.e. By cleaning up in midfield in the second half
He did not once mention the buzzwords:
Threw off the shackles
Express themselves
Puke football
System
Paddy Tally
All behind the ball
Standing off their men
Afraid to have a go etc

I for one dispise the negative pub talk on football that fills in for analysis especially from older panel members
I was at the game on Sunday and in the first half listened to all of these phrases coming from a gent behind me
I was sure he was from Galway (poor Galway performance in the first half) but at HT when I turned around I found he was from Roscommon
Human kind are basically sheep and there is a herd mentality
If the experts say it is poor stuff then it must be
The negative one liners as opposed to analysis is doing the game no favours
Thank god for Tom is all I can say

I have to agree with you
I thought tom parsons analysis was top class
he had the facts and figures to back it up
he was refreshing to say the least and whats more,
it was very natural and easy to listen to him
in some way what kevin walsh was saying about lazy punditry analysis is true
I have felt this is true for a long time
just listed to brolly whining about paddy tally hes like a broken record at this stage
even though tally hasn't been envolved with tyrone for a long time,
according to brolly paddy tally is responsible for this negative football all over the country
no talk about what a brilliant coach he is
able to get players enthused in what hes doing too
peter canavan had an article at the weekend where he had great things to say about tally
as he played under him he should know.

Sunday Game football analysis is a moan and a groan but RTE must think its what the Irish public like. Just look at the setup in Soccer punditry for the last 30 years
Personally, I'm done with them. Its like they are all miserable.

I think the one that irritates me the most is Thomas O'Shea "Yeeerra, I know he kick him but a yellow would have been enough. Harsh sending off for me.."

I posted a few months ago during the league about the appalling standard of analysis in some quarters. It was blatantly obvious thst many of them hadn't even seen the most of the games of the teams they were commenting on.
The Sunday Game panel for big matches needs a huge shake-up. The problem is RTE don't want to change it, as sensationalist and controversial comments will always make bigger headlines.
As a result we're stuck with cliched nonsense from the usual suspects.

It's probably a generational thing too, the older pundits are extremely negative. The ones in the 40 or under bracket are more measured. They are recently retired so they are more in touch with the modern game.

It's only a couple of weeks since Parsons played against Galway so he knows them better than any regular pundit.

I'd still listen to it over the rubbish that's on sky. The football analysis and pundits on sky would put you to sleep at the best of times and the hurling analysts arent a whole pile better.
Having said that RTE are lucky that they have Lyster and Cantwell who are easier on the ear and understand the game

totally agree and a lot of the RTE guys always have their newspaper columns, think they have their punditry prepared before the games half the time, just to fit in with their colums. As much as some people bemoan Sky at least they discuss what happened in the game, same with BBC. Maybe RTE should hold a panel show once a week where Spillane, Brolly etc can argue over whatever their main issue is that week, meanwhile the Sunday game should be left to proper analysis. It is embarrassing to watch Brolly and Spillane trying to talk over each other.

I thought Tom Parsons was excellent on the Sunday Game, he analyzed the game properly and had no agenda. Hopefully we will see more of him on TV in the year ahead. Just wish the pundits would stick to analyzing the game that is taking place rather than waffling on about the state of the game.

For the Galway fans who are posting, I wouldn't worry about what pundits say about you. Galway are in the business of winning games, not entertaining the general public. There is no doubt the more successful you become the more negative press you will get. The game last Sunday wasn't a classic but I still enjoyed it.

As a small island, it doesn't take much in the way of controversial comments to stir up a bit of interest and debate. This is obviously the approach RTE has taken/stumbled across with its sports production in the past 20 years or so.

However there's a huge number of outlets we can access nowadays with excellent quality analysis and it's time RTE upped its game. As a taxpayer, we should be demanding more of the broadcaster of the national game, and not having the channel as a medium for retired players to launch their career profiles in the media, nor should the analysis be treated as a pantomime show, with the appropriate villains on show.

Similar to the hold of the Catholic church a generation ago, the Brolly-Spillane-O'Rourke axis of opinion and influence is dwindling and the RTE producers need to recognise this, and not continue to treat its viewers like idiots.

We're a better informed and wiser audience nowadays. Treat us with more respect please RTE.

Tyrone and Donegal won the all irelands with defensive gameplans and Brolly and co. thought it was brilliant. When did they change their minds? Joanne Cantwell is a good presenter but she could pose this aforementioned question.
