Derek McGrath

(Oldest Posts First)

It is sad to see such a great character as Derek McGrath step away from his position as manager of the Waterford Senior Hurling team. He represents all that is true and fair about our great and sacred game. Like many who have gone before him, his work will only truly be recognised and felt in his absence.

I wish the best in whatever he does next. I hope he gets a nice well-paying media gig as some kickback for all the selfless dedication he has poured into teams in Waterford over the years.

A class act, well done Derek for all you achieved as Waterford manager and how you conducted yourself with such grace and class on and off the field.

A class act indeed.

Now there's an opportunity for all who criticized his approach to prove that they can do more than talk

Here here..

Liked him, sad to see him go. I was desperate for him to win a Liam McCarthy with Waterford.

Such is life..

Class act.

Look at the way he dealt with the umpires mistake a few weeks ago.
Most managers would have lost the plot and Derek just pointed
out that everyone can make a mistake.

Good lesson for all of us.

Always conducted himself well so sad to see him go in that way.

I think it is time for someone new for Waterford though.

He comes across as a very decent, honest man who cares for his players and loves the game of hurling. His retirement is hurling's loss so hopefully he'll be back in some shape or form.

Best of luck Mr. McGrath.

And they weren't far away.

Only lost the final by a puck of the ball against a team who put a near perfect final performance together - only 6 wides and 1 missed free the whole game.

The last Derek probable wants right now is another job. However Waterford would be stupid to let such a talent slip away. Make hime Director of hurling for Waterford but give him a team of people to share the work load so he can work his job and have family time. May be Brick and some more respected people.

He is a class act. Unfortunately the hurling traditionalists will never let him get the praise he deserves.

He seems to have had the man management down to a T and that takes some doing in Waterford.

Enjoy the retirement Derek , you deserve it but the hurling landscape will be a poorer place without him and Waterford on the whole.

Nice man. Players loved him no doubt.
One league title in 5 years would still not be considered a great success though and probably should have won more.

He took over a team in serious decline.

The question I would ask when considering if a manager was good/great is, "did he get the most out of the players at his disposal?" I think he did fair good.

I dont think you cant map high performance with Silverware. If that was the case, Brian Cody could win All-Ireland's with Westmeath
