Dark Horses For Super 8S

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Instead of looking at Dark horses for Sam as there probably are none, who do people reckon are dark horses to make the Super 8s ?

My own county Meath - hard to know yet what championship form will be like, they were very disappointing in the league continue that form and they will be nowhere near the Super 8s. They have however now won three in a row and quite convincingly, beat Longford and that will be 4, a good showing v Dublin and then who knows.

Kildare - similar to Meath disappointing league campaign all be it at a higher standard, but haven't won a game in almost a year, still expect them to make leinster final, after that depending how they fair in it, they'd have a great chance in making it

Roscommon- would expect them to make a connacht final with a likely meeting with Galway, however don't think they will beat Galway two years in a row, that would leave them in a 4th round qualifier which after a possible lost to Galway could be difficult to pick themselves up again.

Armagh - in great form during the league and really seem to be playing well and difficult to beat under McGeeney. Have a difficult first match against Fermanagh but will get over that and then Monaghan or Tyrone. Could be a shock there and that would leave them with a brilliant chance thereafter.

Tipperary - now Tipp are a real dark horse and have some fantastic forwards who would make it onto any team in Ireland. Have a lovely style of play and would be a fair shout to make

Clare - quite similar to Tipp with where they are in their development and came very close to beating Mayo last year. If they could keep that level of performance they'd be a match for any team.

Laois - okay they have been playing at division 4 and Wexford should have knocked them out of Leinster but they got over and will beat Westmeath next day out. That will leave a game against neighbors Kildare, and with two wins under belt they will he a right match for them. If they were to win that that would leave them having to just win one match (after a possible leinster final) to make the super 8s

My dark horse - one of Tipp or Meath

Really hard to call but id say Tipp but it obviously depends on the draw ,I can see Kildare ,Roscommon ,Donegal and tipp being the provincial runners up and the 2 big boys from the qualifiers if they remain apart mayo and Monaghan( who I think will lose to Tyrone) would prob beat all them

Roscommon aren't dark horses. I'll be surprised if they don't make the Super 8s.

Everyone seems to be writing off Cork which is understandable given recent form but they will be favourites to beat Tipp.
If they do then only one win away from the super 8s. They still have some very good players but they have not performed for a few years for some reason.

However, it would be good to see Tipp get to a munster final and build on their progress from the last few years.
I can't see any of them teams listed in the opening post other then Tipp to make it to the super 8s. But as you said it will depend on the draw.

As I said it all depends on the draw ,if they were to draw against mayo or Monaghan I'd expect both of them to beat Roscommon and then they wouldn't make super8s ,its all hypothetical really until the draw is made at that stage

Look the plan for Meath now is super 8. However it will be a tough ask, get over longford is first hurdle. Then it's you know who and who knows after that. I think we have the players, management and mindset to make it. But that doesn't guarantee anything. Lot depends on luck of the draw too.
I'd put tipp as the front runner apart from the obvious. Kildare haven't won a game in 11 months, they may make Leinster final but they have lost to longford etc this year. Can't see them making it.
Roscommon again handy enough into last qualifying round, lot will depend on who they draw too.

Slot of people have tipped roscommon, kildare and tipp to make it. A Clare, longford, fermanagh or even cork would be what I'd consider a dark horse, teams No one are talking about. All depends on the draw but Armagh for me would be most likely of the teams not getting much of a mention

Exactly. Roscommon are very likely going to be in the Super 8s.

Win their Connacht Semi Final (very likely) then they have 2 bites at the cherry to get to the Super 8s.

Dublin
Kerry
Galway
Winner Tyrone and Monaghan
Kildare (easy draw)
Donegal (easy draw)
Roscommon
Winner Tipp and Cork

These teams will be the favourites.

Mayo, Cavan, Meath will have a tough task negotiating loads of qualifier rounds.

Monaghan Tyrone and Tipp Cork games are huge for the teams involved.

The losers will have 3 or 4 wins away from the super 8.

Shows up how nonsensical the timing of when you come into qualifying is.

I don't think Tipp are Dark Horses. They beat Cork in the league and will probably beat them again in the munster semi.
It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that they could beat Kerry in the final either. even if they dont, they will have one game to reach the super 8s.. Lets face it, the super 8s will comprise 8 from this list.

Dublin,Mayo,Kerry,Galway,Tyrone,Monaghan,Donegal,Roscommon,Tipp,Kildare

I'd fully expect both mayo and Monaghan/tyrone to come out of the qualifiers if they can avoid each other regardless of how any games and who they could potentially get from the provincial runner ups

There could be tricky fixtures for Mayo.

Cavan could be a banana skin, if they got a Monaghan, Tipp or Cork they can be tough too.

Mayo will likely be the best team in the qualifiers but 4 games needed to make the super 8s makes it tough for them.

Last year they flirted with disaster against Derry, Cork and Roscommon. They can be prone to poor performances early in the summer.

Yeah Roscommon probably the most likely given they will have two chances to get there.

But there is always one team who goes on a run in the championship who no one expects e.g. carlow last year had a good run, Fermanagh and Tipperary in previous years.

I know it all depends on the draw but what teams have the potential to go on such a run. I think it's Tipperary even if they lose to Cork.

Armagh will be in with a shout I reckon, of the Leinster teams I could only see Kildare or Longford having a chance, cork or tipp have a decent chance too.

Are Cork dark horses? Are Monaghan? Are Kildare? DRk horses would have to be from division 2 or lower imo. Armagh would be lively dark horses

Would Mayo be regarded as a dark horse now? Seems most pundits are writing of our chances of even making the super 8's..so I guess it will be an achievement to get there

The whole thread is a bit silly.

It's hard to know of a dark horse as it's so dependent on the draw.

The likes of Longford, Fermanagh, Sligo, Clare, Down, Armagh could be unfancied teams that may have an outside chance of getting there. Realistically they'd want to avoid the likes of a Mayo or Monaghan/Tyrone in the qualifiers and then pull off a decent upset against a Provincial runner up.

Westmeath/Carlow/Laois could cause an upset in 1 side in Leinster and knockout that would throw the cat amongst the pigeons a little and make it more likely a weaker side emerges.

I wonder what odds you'd get this evening on Tyrone and Mayo both making the super 8's? be a lot bigger odds than a month ago anyway.
