Umpires

(Oldest Posts First)

lads its not a bashing but these lads give up their time all year with no rewards. I know people are going to start slagging them tonight after the Donegal Cavan game. All i will say is please dont again because of my reason above they give up their time all year round and yes mistakes can be made by players managers referees but without these lads giving up their time games wont happen. Asking for umpires to be referees wont happen either as there is not enough to do that but, but there is no need for that to happen either before the umpire bashing starts take a breath and just wonder could and would you do it yourself

A shot that was so far wide it almost went out for a sideline ball was flagged as a point by one umpire. he was then over-ruled

there should be an umpire test though,it is not good enough i seen cork got a score in wexford park in the league and it would be no exaggeration to say it was about half the height of the post and at least 3 feet wide.
it was laughable if it wasnt so serious.big games are decided by tiny margins and the umpire should not be 1 of those margins.

Never mind the Intercounty umpires, It is the club game umpires I love - the ones where after about 4 or 5 calls from the selectors looking for someone over the fence to do umpire eventually someone goes forward. Every few games you will get one lad standing up at the posts and he doesn't care how obviously wrong his decisions are, he will stick with signalling in a way that is of benefit to his team - affectionately known as the Biased Umpire. Saw it only last week in a game - the umpire was signalling every point that was close to the upright as a wide (and a couple which were nowhere near the post), was signalling the couple of 45s his team conceded as wides and any time the ball was near the end line on the attack he was straight with the arms out for a wide - even when the ball was a good foot inside still. Have seen manys a tussle start over dodgy umpiring over the years.

I dont see why umpires cant be part of the overall decision making process to be honest or lads running the line, i accept they are volunteers etc. Perhaps that is not the best way to approach the situation and with increased responsibility maybe some form of compensation is fitting, im not saying being paid, but perhaps expenses or hotel stays etc if traveling. I dont see it as being any different then a ref, if their are officials on the field i think it would be good for the game if they assisted the ref especially with the off the ball stuff. Its pretty clear that the ref needs help in the modern senior game.

Some situations are farcical at the moment were an umpire or a lad running the line is looking straight at incident and doesn't call it because they dont wont to get involved or its not my job, im not saying all, but it need a consistent approach and remit.

The reason they should be referees is because they would be the best placed person on the pitch in a lot of cases to call a penalty for example. He is far better placed than a referee running his best from the 65 after a long clearance, in hurling anyway!
Don't get me started on the lads in the European soccer - they might as well have our umpires.
Re that point v Cork - that umpire was the referee's father. Only in GAA. Imagine Pierluigi Collina having his father running the line.

there should be a net between the posts, same as the goals. put an upper limit by means of a top cross-bar and have the point-scoring area incased in a net.

It amazing me the amount of refs on this forum. How are the GAA constantly appealing for refs when there are about 100 on here alone. Strange

Umpires got a call wrong in Castlebar yesterday, in the first half Galway took a shot from a difficult angle, umpire rose his hand for a point, everybody in the stand who was directly behind the ball and could see the flight of the ball was wide, you can see on TV that the supporters were waving wide, I was sitting in the stand and could see it was wide, it's time every county venue have Hawkeye
