This is ridiculous! The free ticket business is just an arrangement between the Dublin County board and their season ticket holders. Why the hell should this arrangement be allowed to impact other counties? If there is not enough space in Aughrim to accommodate all the Dublin fans who are entitled to free tickets, that should not be Wicklow's problem. The game should be played in Aughrim, and the Dublin county board should be left to figure out what to do with the few thousand tickets they are allocated. Wicklow are being robbed of a sellout home game just because the Dublin County board made a promise to their fans that they can't keep - what a sham! A fair few posters here just using this as another excuse to kick the Dubs. Everyone agrees that those who go to league games should get the opportunity to buy championship tickets first. If the game was played in Aughrim that would mean there would be about 8000 Dubs at it and 2000 from Wicklow. The game is not on tv. How does preventing most young Wicklow kids the opportunity to see their county play against the biggest stars in the game help promote GAA in any way there? Play it in Portlaoise and any kid who wants to go can get in, that would seem to be much better promotion of the game surely? Soma (UK) - Posts: 2630 - 15/05/2018 11:16:11 2100907 Link 1 |
Listen it's the same old same old every year in Leinster. Whenever it happens to an individual county they're up in arms about not getting the home venue against the Dubs, but then when it is happen to another county they're all conspicuously quiet. So by your logic there should be no games at all as you could say the same about nearly every county .How many hammerings did Dublin give out last year?

St conleth park would easily hold the 8-10,000 that would be interested in going to that game, not every game has to be played in crokepark.

It's not kicking the Dubs, it's supporting and promoting the game in a weaker county. I haven't heard anyone blaming Dublin for the situation. And how do you know only 2000 from Wicklow would turn up. I bet the attraction of a big game in Aughrim would bring out lots of Wicklow supporters. If these counties are always treated like second class citizens how will you ever generate any interest in the GAA? It should be all ticket in Aughrim, the Dubs will win anyway and any Dublin supporters who don't make the game will still have umpteen chances to see their team but at least all ticket gives both sets of supporters the same chance to be there.

But how is it supporting the game in weaker counties if kids can't watch their team play against the biggest stars in the game like Cluxton, O'Sullivan, Fenton and Kilkenny? Aughrim has a capacity of 10000. Dublin would easily bring 8000 season ticket holders, probably more. That leaves a maximum of 2000 for Wicklow supporters. Now you might say that the Dublin fans who go to league games all throughout winter shouldn't get a ticket and instead Wicklow fans who might rarely go to games should get the tickets instead and that is fine but it goes against the argument most make that those who go to all league games should get priority. The season ticket is a way of promoting the league and rewarding fans who turn out for every game - are you now saying they should be told to go jump in favour of fans who rarely go to games?

No what I'm saying is that the top teams should play each other in a top tier n the bottom teams should play in the 2nd tier. Dublin Gaa have done it with the senior championship and it's been a massive success. Obviously there will be still hammering here n there but mostly its been fairly level field with results, it's been great for the weaker clubs. clondalkindub (Dublin) - Posts: 9926 - 15/05/2018 14:42:30 2101002 Link 1 |
Have you seen the high number of mayo fans that travel to games? My god they attended religiously. Heard about 7000 of them went to clones while the entire attendance for Ross game in tipp was about 2300 including both tipp and Ross fans. They outnumbered ye about 3/1 in croke park for both games they outnumbered the dubs on some occasions. To think more people would attend a Ross game then a mayo game is laughable . When it comes to fans the only county that travels more obviously coz of the population is dublin Galwayjoe86 (Galway) - Posts: 258 - 15/05/2018 16:55:56 2101066 Link 0 |
So you are saying only 2000 Wicklow supporters will turn up for a home game but these kids you talk about will travel to portlaoise in larger numbers? Now that really doesn't make sense. I don't see why these season ticket holders can't have their ticket entitlement rolled over to the next game. Let's face it, Dublin are guaranteed to be involved. The priority should be about growing the game, giving Wicklow a home game against the best team in the country would have to help do that surely. If these kids you are worried don't go to a home game to see these great players you mentioned, can you see them trekking to portlaoise? If we keep denying these teams good attractive games at home then you won't create any interest and we just keep going as we are. It's a once a year problem, we should be able to get around it if we wanted to.

If the capacity is 10000 and Dublin take 8000 tickets then simple maths says the most Wicklow can have is 2000. Now if you are saying that fans who buy tickets and go to all league games should be told 'stay at home we would rather have supporters who rarely attend at the game instead' that's fine but I'm not sure if that is the way to treat loyal supporters. There are 40 clubs in Wicklow, a bus of 50 kids taken from each and brought 40 miles over to Portlaoise to watch their clubmates play the Dubs would promote football, not having the game in Aughrim with no tickets for locals.

How many season ticket holders and Parnell Park passes do the Dubs have? The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2087 - 15/05/2018 17:24:47 2101095 Link 0 |

I simply think once a year a bit of favouritism could be shown to the home team. Is your logic then only applying to Dublin or should Wicklow or any county at their level not ever get a home game against Kildare,Meath, Westmeath or if Wicklow were to draw Mayo in the qualifiers they should be denied that game at home too? Where do you draw the line? The Dublin fans will see their team for a whole summer, Wicklow needs the boost a lot more. I'm sorry but going to games never guarantees you a ticket the next day as I found out myself when we were in the All Ireland years ago. Only game I couldn't get a ticket for was the Final but you just wear it and carry on. Aughrim could have been made all ticket and leave it in Wicklow. Split the allocation down the middle.

I think it's about 6500 total. 4500 season tickets and 2000 Parnell passes. Might be slightly more.

On what basis are you suggesting Dublin should be allocated 8000 tickets ? As for your suggestion of 40 buses being hired by clubs to travel to Portlaoise or wherever, it's laughable. You expect the Wicklow clubs to cough up hard earned cash for a bus & food to see their team playing at "home". Have you seen Wicklows Central funding & coaching allocation from the Gaa v Dublins or the difference in what they take in in sponsorship, yet your suggesting that the minnow should fork out to go & see the Dublin machine & that this would promote football in Wicklow !!!! You should apply for a job in Croke Park, you would fit right in with their thinking & recent appointments, farcical suggestion. The GAA are fast becoming a joke & the Dublin power base needs to be reined in. This idea of appeasing Dublin fans & taking home venue off counties is a joke as is the funding issue which even the current Ard Stiurothoir says won't alter greatly for years. A Dublin President & Ard Stiurothoir who is involved at club level in Dublin, AIG one of the biggest companies in Ireland pumping €5 Million in & the scandal of the massive discrepancy in funding allocation, it's all going one way. A media & Association befixed by everything Dublin, no wonder the GAA is struggling in Wicklow. The current leadership & outgoing President & Ard Stiurothoir have facilitated all this. Apathy sets in when counties see no change or leadership from the top or equity in the treatment of weaker counties. Wicklow today, some other county next week.

It's not a point of view that many Wicklow would be likely to agree to. A great way to promote the game in Wicklow is to bring the big games to Wicklow. You cannot replicate the buzz that a big championship brings to a county and the interest that it generates particularly among the youngsters that are the future players, administrators and supporters. It also has an economic kick-back for the local businesses that provide financial support for the GAA at local and county level. Dublin supporters have ample opportunity to watch their team in Croke Park so I would no hesitation in restricting their allocation of tickets to less than 50%. Wicklow and other such counties bereft of huge stadiums have every right to be given the same respect as counties that have grandiose facilities. neverright (Roscommon) - Posts: 1648 - 15/05/2018 20:21:36 2101149 Link 2 |
Think your wrong there mate, Kildare fans attend games in massive numbers, especially that deep into the championship. The was 66.000 at the Leinster final last year. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4441 - 15/05/2018 20:23:47 2101150 Link 0 |
There were almost as many Mayo fans as Sligo fans in Ruislip a couple of weeks back. The best supporters in the country.

How do you think young lads from Bray or Baltinglass would get to the home game in Aughrim, on their bikes? I was delighted to see Wicklow won at the weekend, especially for Evans, but if Offaly had won the Dubs would have been playing in Tullamore and we would have been spared all this bellyaching. Clearly Offaly are a GAA superpower who were able to get a fixture arranged with the golden child at home despite them having all that AIG money. As for the game being a big boost for the local economy, there are about 2 pubs and 1 cafe in the village and it's 50 miles south of Dublin - I can't imagine a huge demand for hotel beds in the area.
