There's no bitterness, it's just my opinion. For context of who's mouth it's coming from, half of my family are from Clare. I have flown over the Atlantic and spent huge money to be at the 95, 97, 2002 and 2013 (drawn game) All Ireland finals to shout myself horse cheering on Clare as a Galway Man. I just think any Ireland won without having to go through Tipp or Kk is very favourable for a team. And I've stated given how Cork and Clare have faired in the 3 following years it shows it wasn't the best quality championship In '13. I'm glad to see both teams are on the up again. Miami if you were to go through the history of All Irelands played you could probably argue that there have been many "soft" All Ireland's won. It could be argued that Galway have facilitated a few and maybe won a few too. Certainly 1975, '79 we handed on a plate to KK by taking out the hot favourites and their main rivals. Ditto 2001 and 2005 we did favours for Tipp and Cork by ambushing KK in the semi final and failing to follow through with the same level of performance in the final. When a team wins an All Ireland let's be happy for them, acknowledge that they were the team that deserved to win it in that particular year and not be putting asterisks after their success. Would you agree so that the 1980 All Ireland when Galway 'only beat' Offaly and Limerick or 89 when Tipp 'only beat' Limerick, Waterford, Galway and Antrim are in any way devalued All Irelands. Well I do not think so, you can only beat what you meet.

What about Galway being automatically in All Ireland Semi finals for decades? And they could only win a few All Irelands. That's one of the most shocking statistics in sport. That and Galway record in Munster. Didn't win one game and then pulled out to save yourselves more embarrassment. PeggyShippen (Limerick) - Posts: 300 - 13/06/2018 14:04:46 2111041 Link 0 |
Well Miami Does the fact that Clare beat Galway hollow in 2013, the same Galway that had taken your much vaunted KK to a replay the previous year, not impress you or the fact that easily beat my own county, who had already beaten both Cork and Tipperary earlier that year and put Kilkenny to the pin of their collar in 2014. lrh agree with you totally, however a friendly correction Limerick had beaten both Cork and Tipp in 13 and beat Tipp in 14 and put KK to the pin of their collar in the AI Semi Final that year.

Yes I agree. And for counties like ourselves and Clare we need to take whatever we get, however we get them. The context of my use of the quality of the 2013 championship was in reply to somebody who said I don't see where the faith in Clare comes from every year, and LRH replied about all the 2013 AI winners. I stand by all my comments, that in the wake of that final Clare and Cork both fell off a proverbial hurling cliff and that perhaps the faith is not warranted. However displays like last weekend in Thurles start to change the mind-set along with most of Corks displays since last season. Miami305 (Galway) - Posts: 147 - 13/06/2018 15:09:34 2111091 Link 0 |
I wasn't born until the late 80's so I cant comment on the quality of the championship in any of those years. I already stated it was no fault of Clares who they met. I think no AI is devalued to any county lucky enough to win it. It means the world. Just looking back with hindsight on the quality of the teams and how they did for the following 3 seasons, it was an easier course than usual to win it.

I completely agree. I call a spade a spade. Im not out here trying to bash any county, as already said I have huge ties to Clare. Just giving my honest opinion and glad its creating some debate.

Christ you win a single all Ireland in thirty years despite getting automatic access to all Ireland semi for over half of that yet you are casting doubt on quality of the 2013 All Ireland............was delighted to see Galway win last year but some of their 'supporters' ( use that term loosely) are fairly losing the run of themselves ..........That 'poor ' Cork team has either won or been in 3 Munster finals in 5 yrs and the same number of all Ireland semi finals......that's good consistency by any standards (albeit not by previous standards set by Cork teams!).......that was a good Clare team that won possibly the most entertaining all Ireland of recent years while accepting it didn't have the intense physicality of some if the tipp v kk or Kk v galway games but then a lot of hurling people prefer the free flowing hurling to the physical battle......either way a good Clare team that deserve respect......

Good man well said and I totally agree with you...they are losing the run of themselves and seem to have a opinion on Everything including a different poster "Mr Senceable" who sticks his nose into everything! A very good Clare team that I have alot of respect and admiration for and with a lot of 2013 team still playing....I've said that they are still serious contenders for 2018 All Ireland.

Wow... this forum is very tough place unless you have an opinion everyone agrees with. Firstly, this has nothing to do with Galway, so get past the county name beside my name. There is no bigger Clare supporter than I, (who isn't from Clare.) So I am losing the run of myself because I am stating why I don't agree with the faith in this 2013 All-Ireland winning Clare team comes from year after year? Clare have not been in Croke Park since September 2013. So we sit here 5 years later and that's why I question the faith in them. The Cork team of 13 (probably) only got past Dublin in the semi final because of a sending off of R O'Dwyer and followed up their 13 AI appearance with a 10 point loss to Tipp in '14 and a 12 point loss to Galway in '15 and another 9 point Munster loss to Tipp in 16 and went out to Wexford eventually. What part of those 3 seasons points to it being not being a poor enough cork team by high cork standards? Poster who addressed Galways munster record and semi final record - I completely agreed with. So please get away from this being about anti any county because its not and I've been at every AI Clare have been in since 95 supporting them. No luckily they paid for me. My first ever AI was 95 as a 9 year old and it will never be matched in terms of atmosphere. You couldn't even walk down the street with Barrys and the Belvedere on with the amount of people. All the painted cars and colour. No doubt it was much the same for you the following year against Wexford. Miami305 (Galway) - Posts: 147 - 14/06/2018 10:38:47 2111410 Link 0 |
Yeah I was at that All Ireland final in 95. It was a real bonus to be there. The real win that year was the Munster final which my Dad took me to. The pressure valve in Clare was finally released. Anthony Daly says the same. There was no bandwagoners from Clare there in Thurles.Must have been outnumbered 4 to 1 by Limerick. The defeat the year before dampened all expectation but Clare hurled up a storm and Limerick were poor..though Quigley had a few chances at goal. I dont care about your background - you are factually wrong. 2013 will go down as one of the most exciting and high quality hurling championships ever. The championship were the pack caught the elite. KK, Tipp and Cork were not up to much in the mid to late 90s - so were the 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 Championships "handy" all Irelands? Arguably the most handy All Irelands if you want to argue this point were won by KK from 2006 to 2012 as really only Tipp challenged them. In 2013 from the semis on any team could have won that All Ireland so Clares win was more impressive. LohansRedHelmet (Clare) - Posts: 2432 - 15/06/2018 02:02:47 2111701 Link 0 |
