Well it still gets me excited, even though it is effectively a one horse race. But there is some local derby's that get people a chance for oneupmanship at least for a year. From a Meath point, I am not looking past a very good longford side, particularly in longford. We may scrape a win, for a bit of a scrap (we probably would win that, as the dubs players wouldn't be able to call in their physios or backroom staff) . Unfortunately I can't see us going any further. On the other side it looks more interesting, can Kildare get back to a Leinster final when they haven't won a match in championship, O'Byrne cup or league. Actually it's last June since Kildare had a win. Has that affected their prep? Hard to know. I know the talk in Westmeath is that they think they will reach Leinster final. Hard to know. For me it's dubl v Westmeath final royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 03/05/2018 16:24:46 2096461 Link 0 |
Not a hope of Westmeath making to the Leinster final. Missing Sharry, Maguire, Dempsey and Holloway from last year who are all certain starters. A few key players have also picked up injuries in April playing club championship. Saying that if they get over Laois though they will have nothing to fear against Kildare. Unfortunately its going to be the same story in Leinster. The first round game with Meath and Longford should be very tight. Probably a 50/50 game; with several players leaving the Meath panel recently you would have to think Longford have a great chance here. Dublin to walk Leinster again which is no good for anyone! A new season generally brings new hope and renewed excitment, but I'm afraid the Leinster football championship is dead and shows no immediate signs of revival. Htaem (Meath) - Posts: 8657 - 03/05/2018 18:21:57 2096484 Link 3 |
That's it in a nutshell, of course should Meath get over longford (not a certainty by any means) then of course I will convince myself (and anyone else who listens ) that we can and will beat dubs :)

While you make some very good points. It is worth pointing out that none of those who have left/been dropped in Meath would be certain starters. Out of the 7 who have allegedly gone , only Tobin would have seen game time as a sub or maybe starter depending on injury etc.

It's a bit sad to see so many Leinster counties so defeated. I'm not going to lie, Dublin will prob Balt walk Leinster, or would be the shock of the century if they are beaten. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 03/05/2018 20:44:55 2096506 Link 0 |
Dublin will win it easy, nobody will argue that. tipp11 (Tipperary) - Posts: 353 - 03/05/2018 21:15:00 2096512 Link 2 |
Meath are hell of a lot better than the performance against tipp , we threw away a injury time 4 point lead against Roscommon away. And that lays the problem apart from the big 4 on our day we could beat anyone. Then on our bad days we could get beat by anyone. It really is that simple. We need to get consistency.

I'm glad it still excites someone

A Dubs Kildare Leinster final with the Dubs winning it. My own Wee County will have a tricky opener against Carlow down in Portlaoise on Sunday week. It's the Wee battle of the two smallest counties in Ireland. OLLIE (Louth) - Posts: 12224 - 04/05/2018 16:37:08 2096689 Link 0 |
That will be a tough one Ollie, although the loss of Murphy is huge to Carlow imo

I'm setting myself up for a fall here but I agree with you on this. I think we are comfortably the 2nd best team in Leinster too & will be very surprised if we're not back in the final. Now....whether being 2nd best team in Leinster is anything to be proud of is an entirely different debate...

Certainly not. We were for years, then it was Westmeath, now maybe Kildare. It means nothing. And no one should use it as anything other than to make sure you become number 1.

. "I think teams are beaten before they go out against Dublin. It's ridiculous; I wouldn't even watch a Leinster championship match now." I wouldn't watch it either although Munster was also a bit of a joke for years with only two serious teams there. The same could be said of Connacht in years past. The provincial system has been mostly uneven and non-competitive in at least two provinces."]I don't know how tomás can do his job properly as a pundit if he doesn't watch Leinster championship matches, I agree if you took Dublin out of Leinster that it would be more competitive but that's not going to happen, it's true some teams are beat before they start but I thought Carlow and Kildare showed the dubs little respect in that regard last year even though they both ultimately got well beat in the end. What. About Cork in Munster? They have rarely challenged Kerry recently... ziggy320001 (Meath) - Posts: 2432 - 07/05/2018 19:46:51 2097144 Link 1 |
Ya cork have been poor lately since 2011/2012 really but that has to do with the structures within cork it's self not through the lack of good players, I'm sure that Cork have as good a set of footballers as ourselves if not even better, but saying that tipp will beat them in the Munster semifinal because of poor management.

Leinster had the closest provincial final last year so by O'Se's logic the whole championship is uncompetitive. That may well be true but at least come out and say it, don't just single out one province. Although given that he was on yesterday promoting a summer of football RTE are trying to get viewers for, maybe he thought that wasn't a good career move. He's in danger of turning into Joe Brolly-lite. kildare73 (Kildare) - Posts: 854 - 08/05/2018 02:00:03 2097187 Link 0 |
He analysed the game between Meath and Sligo last year from a Facebook page of someone. He apologized afterwards saying he got it wrong , and ciaran whelan should have done it instead as he had viewed footage.

Dublin to win 13/14 leinsters. Easy. I won't pay into any matches this year in leinster out of principle as I refuse to support a corrupt system set up by the gaa. Any non deluded fans from outside Dublin should do likewise. Jack_Goff (Meath) - Posts: 2920 - 08/05/2018 10:22:51 2097213 Link 0 |
