Monaghan v Tyrone - Ulster SFC

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Well done Monaghan - well deserved win. The goal for Tyrone at the end was a pity & didn't reflect our dominance in the final quarter. Plenty of areas to work on but delighted with this particular scalp. Am quite sure we will see plenty of Tyrone later on.

First of all my opinion on Tyrone is; the difference between the great team of the noughties and today is that nowadays, on any given day players go missing or have little impact on the game. This would not happen or would not be accepted in the 00s team. The group dynamic would not allow it, you just simply had to perform. This dynamic and honesty of effort rests with the management. Tyrone will be a handful in the qualifiers but they will win nothing this year unless they face a few realities. The Down mauling of us last year gave Tyrone an easy Ulster title, but a false reflection of where we both were.

The game itself, while injuries before and during the game may well have had an impact on Tyrone, ultimately we were a better team and had more impact off the bench as we did in the league match. The late goal took the gloss off it for us. We were an 80 minute team today and I have never seen MOR more animated than today. R Mc Anespie was outstanding today, he came of age today as was flagged by some on our county forum at the end of the league.

Complacency is usually our downfall at this stage, but such is the competition for places I don't think that will bother us this year (our captain only came on for last 10 minutes). It will take a good team to beat us this year within or outside of Ulster.

Ps The minors weren't half bad today either

Some thought Galway v Mayo would be a classic as it was hyped to hills while they also thought Monaghan v Tyrone would be dour defensive low scoring game the very opposite happened and shame on RTE for not showing that game live today.

Great win and performance from Monaghan, that was a great game for RTE to miss out on,why they don't let BBC show it live is beyond me, possibly one of the best contests we'll see in the provincial championship, Monaghan could go a long way this year, potential All Ireland champs? there is no reason they can't, a well balanced team with some magnificent talent and well coached.

Great performance by Monaghan who had stars in Beggan & McManus but it was a real tem performance all round.

No praise for Monaghan is high enough considering the size of the base they have to pick from, add in the fact that the Ulster Final is played in Clones & I don't see anyone in Ulster to stop them this year.

Great result today, I always had confidence we had the ability to go to Tyrone and get a win like that, but it's good to see it in action.

Enjoyable (but nervy)game with solid performances all round, though still much room for improvement in some cases. Beggan was solid all round and his place kicking was superb. The main man stepped up at the end with 4 points in about 5 minutes when the game was really on the line. You'll be doing well to see a better point this year than that one out by the sideline.

We started slow enough but the goal gave us more of a foothold in the game and we improved steadily from there. Tyrone were hard to shake off and when they drew level with 5 minutes to go I admit I was beginning to get a little worried, but our reaction was fantastic as we went up the other end and got the next 5 points in a row. We've become much better at managing these sort of games than a few years ago. The squad was used well today, the side we finished with was of a similar quality to the one which started, which is crucial nowadays.

Onwards and upwards, one game at a time but it's a great start to the summer.

Just watched this game in full on deferred coverage and really enjoyed it. Monaghan full value for the win, goal just before the break was decisive score of the match, subs played a big part. As for the ref, every offence seemed to be a yellow... trip/kick/fellas hauled down , I thought he had forgotten the black and red til right at the end. And he puts up his arm for about 1 second for the advantage before blowing up,. Several times he could have let it go. Some lovely scores and great dead ball kicking from the keepers.

Watched the game on deferred coverage and there was some fantastic scores. Fair enough rte couldn't show it because they chose other games but in that case why couldn't sky? Isn't that the point of the sky deal. I get why people are annoyed when there are big games on sky and rte isn't showing anything but today there was a clash of 2 games that lots of people would like to see why only have deferred coverage of one. I thought the point of the sky deal was to have more televised games.

Great skills by Beggan, Mc Manus & even a great Drew Wylie point, deserving winners. Really is time for Mickey Harte to go, very negative & cynical tactics, taking off their one class forward & watching one of my favourite Gaelic footballers throw a cheap kidney punch which deservedly saw red shows the frustration in that team. Fair play to Malachy O Rourke who with less resources has moulded a nice football side. While not perfect a much better game than last weeks spectacle, Gaelic football needed rescuing after last week.

First of all I wasn't at the game due to work commitments, so followed on Twitter and haven't watched deferred highlights yet, but going by early reports aswell and talking to Tyrone supporters who were at the game Monaghan totally deserved their victory and were the much better team so congratulations to Monaghan. I think this analysis of Tyrone is spot on and if being honest is what most of us feel and have done as last number of years. This Tyrone team needs a deep look inside itself and give the back door a serious rattle to reach the super 8s, it was another very disappointing result in the 2nd massive championship game inside a year, as for anything else as the results show regarding championship we may forget about it. I like every other Tyrone supporter would love to be proved wrong at the minute it's hard to see it no matter how positive you look at it

Conor McManus point near the end was it the greatest point of all time? I'm trying to think of one better ? Maybe I'm just hyper after seeing it just there but my god what a score the man is unbelievable and for 60 minutes he wasn't really in the game wow.

Well done Monaghan, Beggan is in the zone right now on top of his game it's grest to watch, Monaghan have a good squad now aswell they'll take beating.

Tyrone gone backwards too many good players to be beaten that easily , confidence at an all time low after last years semi final. Hard to see them coming back from this.

Michael Donnellan's point or Maurice Fitzgerald's but yeah Conor Mc Manus's point was pure skill. Both feet as well , you can't beat class or skill no matter how cynical you play, he is a glimmer of hope in today's modern shi#e.

That kind of point from Conor is almost his trademark at this stage, I can remember quite a few of them from him.

Although it was only a league game, this one against Cork always comes back to me:

Mickey Harte is like Jose Mourinho. His tactics were once novel and achieved results and titles. Nowadays however, they look old, sterile and no longer fit for purpose.

Take nothing away from Monaghan though. What a performance. McManus will get plaudits for his scores near the end but it was a real team effort. Big Wylie and Mone nailed some beauts as well.
They're big favourites for Ulster now and rightly so. Given their limited playing resources it's fantastic what they're doing. Other "traditional" counties like Meath and Cork should be taking note.

Look I think most would agree with you but a little bit of context. Mayo Galway was hyped for a myriad of reasons primarily with Mayo's top two billing for a long time now and the age profile of their squad against the background of a much younger Galway making inroads in the league. Even with it on TV it drew just short a 30k attendance fans so the hype was justified. There is every chance we will see plenty of dour clashes in this year's Ulster campaign. Pity though TV does not choose the correct games. Most teams play the same way. Just in some games they transition better from defence to attack like today.
