Rules Question - Big Ball.

(Oldest Posts First)

I have always been lead to believe that if you are going down to pick the ball and an opposition player sticks his foot in it's a free. But I'm not sure if that's an actual rule or just something managers tell you and in most cases happens.

Can anyone point me to a rules that can provide a definitive answer please?

Thanks. I seen that rule, but am I to take from that. That if a player is going down for the ball and I can connect with the ball and not the player it's a not a free.

May be covered by 5.3 rough play as well. Most refs will give a free even if contact made with ball.

Frees are frequently given when they shouldn't be. If a player clearly connects with the ball and not a players hands, then a free should not be awarded. If there is contact then :
5.2 To prevent or attempt to prevent an opponent from lifting or kicking the ball off the ground by striking an opponent's hand, arm, foot or leg with the boot or,
5.3 To engage in any other form of rough play
should be applied.

As I said, frees are often given if the ref feels there may be a danger to the opponents hands. However, the rules above state that contact with the opponent has to be made for the infraction to occur!

It is dangerous play and was punished consistently for some years. Now few refs penalise it which is a pity.
