The Clare and Limerick hurlers would be another take on that.

Is it possible for example to have Galway and Monaghan (if both lose first round) play off for a place in the super eight's at some point. salvador (Roscommon) - Posts: 439 - 04/04/2018 14:28:42 2091030 Link 0 |
There should be no seeding in provincials nor the back door, or there should be both seeding in provincials and the back door. Not a mixture of the 2. It is up to provincial councils to step up to this, or Croke park to make the decisions for the councils.

the only ones i would have interest in watching would be connaught to see who out of mayo-galway or roscommon can come out of it at least there is a bit of competition within connaught, Ulster to a lesser extent because in all likely hood it will be tyrone and plus the football is so negative to watch. leinster and munster are a waste of time. and in terms of the sam it is Dublin's even if they only play in second gear!! but as i say i will have the world cup to watch !!

The Last time there was a new structure put in place for the football championship was the introduction of the Back door in 2001. TribalThing (Galway) - Posts: 74 - 05/04/2018 15:29:08 2091266 Link 1 |
For me , not that it's likely to happen due to provincial championship traditions, would be two tiered league competition with home and away fixtures. Game every week. Top team on points wins. Bottom two go down. Top two in division. 2 go up. Less training , more games for players. Dubh_linn (Dublin) - Posts: 2312 - 11/04/2018 08:09:12 2092275 Link 0 |
Also gives teams like Clare, cork, Meath etc the chance to play dubs, Kerry mayo, Tyrone. Twice this would aide in getting much needed competition against the top teams. A good idea, then the top 16 play off for Sam ?

Sam would always be the big prize, yes. Players want more games not more training sessions and supporters get to enjoy those extra games week in week out. Gaa benefit too. What's the chances though ? Dubh_linn (Dublin) - Posts: 2312 - 11/04/2018 11:38:48 2092312 Link 0 |
I dont think this is applicable to the World Cup. International friendlies perhaps. Mismatches in early group stages - perhaps, but the result is still vitally important. Pretty much sums up the way the GAA players would go about their business. Friendlies and mis match early rounds between teams from different divisions would probably not have to give it 100%, but they would care very much about the results. Come knock out stages though, it wouldn't mater if you were from Monaghan or Dublin, the Ukraine or Spain, paid or unpaid, the feeling would be the same about winning or losing. The GAA will find it very hard to abandon the provincial championships. They are engrained in the organisations main competition structure and changing the mindset of the decision makers is a slow and arduous process at the best of times. This I think could be their main weakness. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 11/04/2018 18:03:44 2092440 Link 0 |
A provincial final appearance or a first round home win is all that some teams have to live for.
