Galway Vs Dublin League Final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

All i can say is that after Sunday Dublin have to be the happiest team in the land. Glaway are been talked up as world beaters (and we ourselves know how hard the fall is) and people are talking about Dublin having problems, weak links, and that Comer is going to run over us again next time we meet.

Look at the team Dublin finished with and that kicked on to a 4 point win, many young fellas that have been only getting a go for a year or two.

Jim transitioned out the 2011 team, and he now in rebuilding mode again.

We were missing at the end McCarthy, Mccaffery and O'Sullivan from the defense, and you can add in John Small with the head knock he took. 4 defenders from last years starting team. McCarthy played midfield only because MdMA was up to it but is back again.

In the fowards, we can add Paddy Andrews, Kevin Mc and then the young feels like Scully, Basquel, Howard etc will probably push out Dermo, Brogan and Flynner. Adding that we have Kilkenny, Deano and Mannion, O'Callaghan as starters.

Were Dublin are lucky, if the above is not enough, is that we only have to peak for two months, July and August so will come in fresh to the Super 8s.

Again like the last few All-Irelands, look at the last 10 minutes not the first 65 minutes as this is were we have consistently won our games. Go one man down against Dublin you do not win by 4 points when you are level when the man is sent off.

Galway are coming but will take a year or 2 more for me.

All in all we have an interesting few years ahead.

When will this Mayo team die?
How long for Kerry's young fellas to bed in and challenge?
Have Tyrone got the adjustments to the system to kick on?
Can Galway keep the momentum as they are not coming out of the long grass anymore?
Can Dublin young fellas take over quickly and keep us going another 3 or 4 years.
Will Roscommon, Tipperary, Monaghan be able to throw any spanners in the works.

Looking forward to it

Who is saying Galway are world beaters? We lost the game to a better team? Even us galwegians giving out about the ref admit dublin still deserved the win.

All anyone is saying is we are now challengers who will learn a lot from the league final.Consensus is dublin are the best team in Ireland and i havent seen anyone say any different

He was involved in a few incidents on Sunday in the second half too, rugby tackled McMahon as he was clearing the ball, took Cooper down by holding onto his leg after he played the ball, caught Kilkenny high for which he got a yellow. Lucky to have stayed on the pitch I would have thought. Very good player though, the type that Rory O'Carroll would have relished a battle with. Walsh has pace to burn though but I think Galway need to get him on the ball more. Very dangerous when he ran at us from deep."
Just a couple of points.
Comer was fouled by Cooper, McMahon and Scully in first half. They pulled him first as he went past and the replays of each incident confirm it pretty clearly. There is no doubt however that for 2 of those fouls he did pull the defender down with him as he was falling to 'make sure of the free'. In the Cooper incident there was actually no need to do it at all. It was a clear foul and the ref had blown.
He's hardly unique in this aspect. It's somethinga lot of top forwards wouldbe very well versed in.
As for this making him unpopular outside of Galway, it might, but it shouldn't any more so than other players who the very same or much worse.
I'm a massive fan Ciaran Kilkenny. In my opinion he's in the small group that make up the very best players in the country. You could pretty much play him anywhere and I'm sure he'd excel. He also has legendary Galway connections!
However, for the last few minutes in Salthill a few weeks ago I saw him make no attempt to play football, as he literally pulled Comer to the ground off the ball as soon as the ball was in play. Do I think any less of him for it? Absolutely not.

Have to say i didnt think that much of galway to be honest..decent enough team 'but the way some people are talking them up..a lot of talk about wait till the corofin lads return and so on..has to be said only for 3 great saves from their goalkeeper on sunday it was a hammering.mayo will be loving all this talk about galway.also mayo will be going in as underdogs and that'll suit them down to the ground.

Agree with your main observation there, all that hype has no foundation, not sure how much of it is coming from Galwegians. Dublin bet Donegal and Kildare by similar margins in Croker and they were both relegated. Mayo would be really confident of a win next month so Galway need to keep the heads screwed on right. Dublin are ahead of a chasing pack.

One great save. The other two were fairly routine. Never close to being a hammering. Dublin's hugely greater experience saw them through in last ten minutes. To be that close to Dublin given where we have been in past few years is progress for us. Agree with you about Mayo though, they are definitely waiting in the long grass and are much more battle hardened than us. we have a long way to go both in experience and developing the system to try get a bit more out of the likes of Comer and Walsh

I'd agree with some Dub observations here, that Comer was 'diving', and that Dub defenders picked up cards because of the nature of the dives. I think pulling defenders down is more acceptable, because it's a technique that's usually deployed when defenders are fouling anyway. Still, if refs spot attackers pulling down tackling defenders, they won't award them frees. I also thought Conroy performed an astonishing manoeuvre, when Scully dragged his shoulder. For a man of Conroy's physique and size, it was amazing to see him toppling so spectacularly from such such a seemingly innocuous contact. It got Scully the line. I'm uncertain as to whether these wrestling type moves were preplanned by Comer & Conroy, but they brought Galway a good bit of advantage on the day I thought. I'd expect that referees will be looking closely at Comer's tendencies in the championship, and a repeat of that particular aspect of his league final performance mightn't yield as many frees the next day.

Agree with this and a fair reflection of what most think. For the record I don't hear many Galway fans saying we are world beaters. But in terms of improvement particularly defensively this cannot be denied. We had more goal chances (3 clear ones) against Kerry in last year's q/f than Dublin had last Sunday yet last Summer our performance was not a patch on the one against the Dubs.

Not with Paddy Power, Mayo 4/6 favourites to beat Galway on May 13th

Biggest problem Galway have is trying to keep the momentum going, great going out week after week in the league now the break.the big question is can Galway improve much more or are they nearly at the peak of their powers. The Dublin match at least showed our deficiencies and everyone is agreed there is no plan b.i would not be at all surprised to see mayo set up defensively, as Galway in the past have struggled too with the blanket.

Think that's a fair point. Galway have come on a lot since being in Div 2 last year. Only have to look how Kildare got on in the league this year and they were promoted with Galway . Galway have a steeliness to them now and played well for large parts of the game against Dublin.
The Mayo game should be a great game. The more teams that are improving the better ,The Championshhip needs it.
Galway are certainly going in the right direction. Meath should take note.

Agreed. Galway had a great league and have developed even along the way in this years league.

HOWEVER!

I don't think any really Galway fan will say their world beater. Most Galway football people (myself included) actually think Mayo will win (hopefully an epic contest) in 5 weeks time. I just don't think form counts for much in Galway-Mayo championship encounters. Mayo and Rocheford will want the shortest route to Croke Park this year and will certainly not want to be beaten by the gallant Tribesmen 3 years on the trot (also Rocheford will want the small stat of Mayo never beating Galway under his management taken care of as well). Could easily be a draw, but personally I think Mayo will edge it by a point.

Anyway, no one thinks Galway are world beaters, we're all just delighted that we're competitive again.

Honnnnnnn Galway!!!!

you speak the truth their doc. Galway v mayo will be a classic and it will come down to the wire with the draw or a point to separate both teams. those that I speak to believe that mayo like any dying wasp could have a final sting in their tail. I see galway on the rise, maybe not this year, however if they beat Mayo this year then that will signal the demise of a great Mayo team.

May 13th In Castlebar has the potential to be "Huuuge" as donald duck in America would say.

Should Mayo win, I think they will get an incredible lease of life from it. I don't think the story of "too many times going to the well" will affect them as much this year because the Super8s will breath a fresh approach into the camp in terms of Logistics and training schedules, However, I do think they need a win and go through the front Door. Keith Higgins return to the camp is a major boost for leadership.

If Galway win, It could spell the end of the road for a few of the group who deserve a celtic cross but in this life we don't get what we deserve we get what we take. I don't think the result from the league final would have put much of a smile on Rochfords Face. I believe he was Hoping for Galway to either:
Get Dismantled by the dubs and Panic about there system or,
Beat the dubs and enter a state of complacency.

As a galwegian I think the outcome of the league final was perfect. Stay Competitive, Contest Kick-outs, Stand up Physically and leave plenty to work on before the Mayo Game.
Mayo are Stronger at the moment in the middle third with Parsons O'shea x2 and others.
This will be a big Factor on the day and I personally cannot wait for this one lads.
