Laois And Antrim Fixture A Week After The Other Teams Finish In Division 4 ?

(Oldest Posts First)

Hope I'm wrong on this but the Antrim gaa twitter is stating that their postponed
game with Laois has been put back to Mar 31st/April 1st, a week after the other
teams will have played their last game.

The Division Four final is on Sat 31st of March so it won't be on that weekend.

London v Leitrim needs to be played as well.
It's also down for 1st April according the fixtures page on this site, with the final a week later.

would be great (under the circumstances) if it was a winner takes all game and not a case of one of them already being promoted and the other who would then go up with a win.

Make no mistake Carlow are being being properly shafted here.

Leix and Antrim was postponed last weekend and should be refixed for this coming weekend like every other game that was postponed. Then London could play Leix the following weekend but that's not possible for some reason because it's St Patrick's weekend! So bloody what? That way the league would finish as planned and would avoid fixing the final for 7/8 April which is supposed to be left for clubs!!

Now as things stand Carlow will be finished a week before Leix play Antrim in what will now be their final games. This is a disgrace. Everyone knows division 4 is mathematically now down to a two from three race but now two of those three will play each other a week after Carlow are finished and will conveniently know exactly what they have to do to be promoted. Furthermore, this now also means that if Carlow lose their last game against Leix then Antrim will benefit by playing for promotion a week later against an unmotivated and likely under strength Leix who will already have been promoted.

The GAA couldn't if they tried have concocted this in a way to work against Carlow to any greater extent.

Bottom line is a simple swapping of dates for Leix v Antrim and Leix v London avoids the need to extend the league by another week and maintains the principle that all final round games should throw in on the same day and at the same time thereby giving no teams prior knowledge of what they have to do. Imagine if Leix and Antrim are level with five minutes to go and both know they go up if it's a draw and they get to play again in Croker a week later for the title. You can see both teams playing out time passing it over and back with nobody trying to win/risking losing.

This is all downright unfair on Carlow and is completely avoidable. Of course promotion is still fully in our own hands but the least we should expect is a level playing field.

Laois are scheduled to play London in Ruislip on Sun 11th March - this fixture was know from the outset.
Many hundreds (possible 1000+) of Laois supporters have booked flights and accommodation for this fixture.
Are you suggesting that that they should not be taken into consideration ?

I agree that ideally all Round 7 matches should be played on same date and at same time.

I really dont think this in any way is concocted from the gaa as a way to keep carlow down, carlow wouldnt exactly be high on the list of counties that would offend anyone. I agree 100% this could be a terrible situation like i said above. I presume the decision was made on the basis that teams, supporters who are going to london would have booked well in advance and now instead of making laois and waterford rearrange at a cost travel plans its just leitrim who have to. Were leitrims flights cancelled or pitch unplayable, if flights were cancelled this is the most cost effective way of dealing with it but i agree with you its far from ideal. Thats my opinion on it, i may even be wrong for the reasoning behind the whole decision in the first place. Think im right in saying two wins and carlow go up regardless, hopefully it wont matter in the end

That's fair enough Pudsy about travel arrangements already being made but the entire league programme should have gone back a week then (excepting London's games where travel may be made but all such games are dead rubbers now anyway). That way everyone finishes the same date and time.

I never said it was deliberately concocted this way to keep Carlow down, my point was they couldn't have made it worse if they tried. I also think it's a bit naive to suggest the fact that Carlow wouldn't offend anyone would necessarily mean we wouldn't therefore be treated unfairly. There are countless examples of Carlow being treated very differently to certain other counties with more clout, e.g. the constant changing mid stream of promotion and relegation rules between McCarthy and Ring Cups and hurling divisions 1 and 2 over the last decade depending on whether a traditional county is suddenly seen to be at risk etc etc. but that's not for now.

This suits nobody. Having the final a week later diminishes it. It certainly won't be in croke park now. I'm sure many players in the three squads were looking forward to a chance to play there. It won't be on tv now either. The problem stems from the original fixing of London v laois on a separate weekend.

Its a pity the way it worked out but there are probably a 100 or more Laois supporters going to London this weekend and with the team etc booked months in advance that cant be changed.

You couldn't ask Antrim to come down on a week night to play Laois either...

I don't think any county wanted it this way and the final certainly won't be in croker now which is a pity.

If its Carlow it wil probably be in Carlow v Laois it will be in Carlow as I think Carlow are owed one regarding counties agreement

If its Laois v Antrim it could be anywhere

Antrim v Carlow will probably be in parnell park!

2800 is an astonishing crowd for a division four game against Waterford. Well done Laois. They must be marketing the games very well down there.

Carlow definitely hard Done by also.
