Sorry am I missing something but why wasn't the Cork vs. Tipp football/hurling games not played as part of a double header? Both where in Thurles too! Completely crazy

Replying To PeggyShippen:  "18000 in Galway for the first leinster championship game against Kilkenny. That's a poor crowd in all fairness. RTE were saying Pearse stadium was 'packed'. It didn't looked packed and it wasn't obviously."
I was in Pearse Stadium and it certainly felt packed. People blocking up walkways on terraces etc. Couldn't believe it when they called out 18,000. Would've loved to have known where the extra 9,000 were gonna fit (capacity seemingly 27,000), maybe i could have moved there!

Yep I would say real figure 23k ish. There was room behind both goals. Even in Castlebar two weeks ago with 29.4 k there there was some room but all in all two very healthy attendances.

Yeah 18,000 for Salthill yesterday is completely wrong. Stand and main terrace both 90-95% full, with big crowds behind each goal. Wasn't a full house but wasn't only two thirds full as was made out. I was actually surprised that there was such a small travelling Kilkenny crowd. Sign of the times?

Replying To decky:  "Poor enough crowds for most of the football games. Champions League probably affected the Saturday fixtures and I know Tipp and Cork are both poorly supported in the football (the Hurling the next day would also have had a bearing) but 3 and a half thousand for a provincial semi final between 2 large counties is shocking."
Same attendance at Roscommon Leitrim games now for the last 3 or 4 years. Was closer to 10,000 at the match in Carrick on Saturday i thought though and of course U16s are never counted in these attendance figures.

U16's are counted in championship as far as I know.

Under 16s are counted. They would have to for safety reasons by head steward/fire officer in ground

Did you ever hear of the expression 'fleece them (supporters) at every opportunity'. If both games were played as a double header then the GAA would finally get something right. Give you an example of fleecing the people, on a local radio station, Irish Rail were asked why they charge so much for tickets on match day, if 4 people from the 1 house travel from the west to Dublin it will cost around 160 euro return by train, it costs 50 euro by car. Irish Rail response 'we have to make hay while the sun shines'

I wasn't really referring to the Leitrim v Roscommon game, a crowd approaching 10,000 is a healthy attendance at a game between two of the least populous counties in the country.

Overall attendances to date
Football
Connacht 45,800 (4 games)
Leinster 32,500 (7)
Munster 7,300 (3)
Ulster 48,000 (5)
Hurling
Leinster 55,300 (6)
Munster 81,100 (4).
So the 19 football games drew 133,600 , the 10 hurling games 136,400.
We have 49 football games left (barring replays) while hurling have 17.

Would I be correct that the biggest crowd at a single GAA Championship match in either Football or Hurling this year so far was the Mayo v Galway match in Castlebar just under 30,000

You would be correct! I'd say Cork v Limerick Saturday night will be close to it

Why wasn't this weekends Tipperary vs. Cork games, not a football hurling doubleheader? Huge missed chance by the Munster Council.

Limerick & Cork will draw big crowd for what essentially is a group game, Tipp Waterford though will draw a very small crowd. On in Limerick, lot of days out for people money wise in Quick succession , Waterford morale hence interest very low. My guess is 10,000.

34,608 in Cork last night. Wexford v Galway was a decent enough crowd too 14000.

Great hurling crowds so far. Although waterford v tipp was poor. Last year's finalists against tipp who are one of the favourites. How is there not 20k plus. Also what's the capacity of waterfords home ground? If its around 10k this should have been played there. Hopefully the gaa revamp that stadium to a 30k capacity.

Clare finally getting home games after so long and it's great. The last piece of the puzzle for munster hurling will be waterford getting home games too.

Limerick is about 2 and a half hours from parts of Waterford. I'd have expected a fee more but not much. Tipp supporters have abandoned this current team , have no faith in them. Waterford support seemed to be resigned to defeat. Notable exceptions are the die hard on either team
