Mother of God: Virgin Mary appears in Mayo holding Sam

Mayo stand together and Paddy Power's latest stunt!

Paddy Power are winding Mayo fans up again by creating an apparition of the Virgin Mary holding the Sam Maguire in Knock!

The bookmaker recently travelled to the holy shrine where it arranged for a 70ft imagine of Mary and Sam to be projected onto the front of Knock Basilica.

Mayo's All-Ireland drought is well documented, but Paddy Power are hoping their latest publicity stunt will provide them with some divine inspiration as they prepare to face Kerry in Sunday's All-Ireland SFC semi-final.

Spokesman Féilim Mac An Iomaire, said: "As far as I'm aware Jesus' mammy has never appeared in Dublin, Tyrone or Kerry so she's definitely rooting for the Green and Red. However, as much as they love her in Knock we reckon they would still rather see Cillian O'Connor raising the Sam Maguire."

"Mayo's problems on the pitch seem to stem from the church so the Virgin Mary's reappearance in the county might be just what this team needs to pop its All-Ireland cherry."

Before the championship started back in May, Paddy Power headed to Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs, to place an advert seeking advice from them on how to end their All-Ireland 'curse'. The Cubs ended their own famine last year when they won their first MLB World Series in 98 years.
