Westmeath manager Jack Cooney is adamant that they must improve if they are to get something from their game against Fermanagh in TEG Cusack Park on Sunday.

The Lake County looked set to pick up their second win of the campaign when they were leading Cavan by two points heading into injury time at Kingspan Breffni Park last Saturday evening, but the home side finished strongly to score an unanswered 1-03 to claim the points.

It was a heartbreaking defeat for Westmeath and Cooney stressed to the Westmeath Independent that they must regroup and focus on the Fermanagh game.

“The Fermanagh game is not going to be easy. This is their second year up in Division 2. They were pushing for promotion late on last year. They put in a good performance against Kildare last week and they were a point up with five or six minutes to go in normal time. We are under no illusions about the challenge ahead of us,” said Cooney.

The last meeting between the sides came in 2018 when Westmeath recorded a two-point win over Fermanagh in a league clash at Cusack Park, Mullingar.
