Given all that is ongoing and all that has taken place during the season, there was a disappointingly small turnout for the An Riocht Camogie Annual General Meeting. Every one of us must understand that we have a role to play, whether a player, a parent or a supporter, whether for one hour a week or for one hour a day, whatever we can give, we must give, if we are to see camogie prosper.

In October there were 50 girls who attended the Camogie Academy more than once but there were a further 20 girls who have not attended regularly and are missing out on the opportunity to develop their skill levels over this otherwise quiet time. Thanks to all who have helped over the first four weeks, eight of the coaches have signed up to the Goldmark Volunteer programme. The final four weeks are now underway and it’s not too late to join in as a player or as a helper.

An Riocht Camogie aims for 2018 were partly met. They were

1/ to promote a healthy lifestyle which would maximise the potential of all individuals. This is ongoing: through the Kingdom Camogie Academy we provide the opportunity for girls to be active each day; by providing personalised water bottles and excluding energy drinks from the vending machine we encourage girls to choose water as a drink; by providing fruit after practice we encourage healthier eating alternatives. In the near future, we hope to facilitate a series of personal development programmes in association with An Riocht Healthy Club Officer and Kingdom Youth Club.

2/ to give every camogie player the opportunity to learn, develop and improve their camogie skills in a friendly, fun and safe environment. Fewer teams better mentored may realise this aspiration more than more teams understaffed. This depends on having enough mentors with each age group as there is a direct correlation between behaviour and the ratio of coaches to players and we struggled at times to achieve the desired ratio so going forward we may need to look tactically at our numbers and perhaps ditch a team(s) and play girls out of their age group. We will also need to recruit more coaches from families and from adult players and train them up ahead of the new season, if not you, then who?

3/ to give every player the opportunity to play in ‘Go Games’, friendly, league and championship games. This was achieved by entering two adult teams and at every underage level, however going forward unless there is an increase in assistance it will not be possible to repeat as mentors were on occasions overstretched and left in unsafe circumstances.

4/ to develop a progressive structure to sustain a senior graded team in the Down league & championship. There is ground to be made up here, certainly in 2018 we competed well in Division One and won a Senior Championship match for the first time in over 30 years but sustainability relies on current adult players upping their game and at underage, a process put in place to develop skilful players who aspire to play top level camogie for An Riocht. More coaching, less training should be the mantra here.

5/ to ensure support and respect for team mentors and players. Again, the ratio of coach to player and the implementation of Codes of Conduct are essential in establishing ‘best practice’ and there should be no compromise in demanding high standards of everyone involved in An Riocht Camogie.

6/ to support all cultural and administrative initiatives which would promote a wider skill set necessary to develop and sustain the club. To this end we took part in administrative and coaching courses but the same few going to everything is not the best way forward, we need to spread the base. We need to build club capacity, that is the process of developing and strengthening the skills, instincts, abilities, processes and resources needed to survive, adapt, and thrive as a Camogie club.

Club Chairperson Tara Campbell took the chair for the election of officers which resulted as follows:

Camogie Chairperson Paula Fearon, Vice-Chair Aine Donnan, Secretary/PRO Clara Killen, Registrar/Treasurer Marie Trainor, Schools Liaison Officer Sheila McAlinden, Coaching Officer Rosanne Small; Player Representatives to be selected at players first get-together on Sunday 11th November and Children’s Officer to be appointed at first committee meeting on Thursday 15th November.

Anyone who feels they have something to offer during the next twelve months should contact any of the Camogie committee listed above before the first committee meeting on 15th November.

Camogie Coach Application forms are available and need to be completed and returned on or before Wednesday 21st November.
