Ulster club SFC: Burren fail to make wasteful Scotstown pay

Eye on the ball...Orin Heaphey of Scotstown is out in front during the Monaghan SFC final against Ballybay

Scotstown (Monaghan) 0-13

Burren (Down) 0-10

Scotstown kicked 13 first half wides, but still managed to get past Burren in their Ulster club SFC quarter-final clash at Pairc Esler in Newry.

All Star goalkeeper Rory Beggan capped a memorable weekend by scoring from play after taking a return pass from Frank Caulfield in the 24th minute as the Monaghan champions built on their preliminary round victory over Derrygonnelly to progress to a semi-final against Derry kingpins Coleraine.

The winners were completely on top in the opening half, but their wastefulness in front of goal meant they only led by 0-6 to 0-3 at the interval. They opened up an early 0-3 to 0-1 lead thanks to points from Francis Maguire and Shane Carey before Burren regained parity through Eamonn Toner and Cathal Foy.

However, Scotstown reeled off three unanswered points to take a double-scores lead into the break.

The four-in-a-row Monaghan champions resumed with four more points without reply per Kieran Hughes, Shane Carey and Maguire and they were sitting pretty on a 0-11 to 0-4 midway through the second half before a black card for Kieran Hughes coincided with a Burren revival that saw them score six points on the trot to trail by the minimum with three minutes remaining.

Donal O'Hare slotted four frees while Foy and Sean Murdock were also on the mark as the hosts stormed back. But their comeback hopes were ended by late points from Carey and Donal Morgan as the Down kingpins finished with 14 men after substitute David McEntee was red-carded in injury-time.
