Gaeil Fhanada club notes

U6s & U8s Parish League

Huge thanks to all the children (and parents) for coming out last night, Sunday 9th September, to give the league such a successful start. We had a big crew there and hope they enjoyed the occasion! As the weather is turning a bit colder we ask that the footballers bring along a hoodie or track-suit top next Sunday. Finally we would really appreciate it if you would spread the word and encourage more to come out to the games - it doesn't matter if they haven't come out before now! Thanks and we look forward to seeing you all in Portsalon next Sunday at 6pm!

Minor County Final

The best of luck to our Minor boys this Wednesday, 12th September, as they make their way to Convoy to play in the County Final. Great to get this far, hopefully we will see a good match and be rewarded with some more silverware for the club! Good luck lads!

U13 Boys

U13 Northern Division 2 Championship:

Gaeil Fhanada 0.21 V Gweedore 2.03.

Although the game was played in wintry conditions, the pitch was still in great condition after all the rain. The Fanad boys played some great football moving the ball quickly. They kept the scoreboard ticking against the breeze in the first half. The Gweedore goalkeeper made some brilliant saves and overall had an outstanding game. Again the Fanad lads played really well as a team for the second game in a row. All the squad got good game time. Next up is a local Derby with Milford in Moyleview Park this Friday the 14th. Time to be confirmed.

Ladies Junior Champions

Gaeil Fhánada 5:09

Naomh Muire 3:07

There were great scenes of celebration yesterday morning in Glenswilly, when Michelle Doherty, captain of the victorious Gaeil Fhánada ladies team lifted the cup as the team were crowned County Junior A champions after defeating Naomh Muire in a high scoring contest. Goals win games, and the Gaels hit the back of net five times over the course of the hour and that was ultimately the difference between the teams.

Gaeil Fhánada had a strong panel to choose from, but were unfortunately without the services of Caoimhe Walsh who had a great game in the semi-final. Rachel Sweeney replaced Caoimhe and apart from that it was an unchanged team from the team who came out on top against Glenswilly in the semi-final.

Naomh Muire had the perfect start to the game and were a goal to the good after twenty seconds. A ball into the square took a wicked bounce and looped over Gaels net minder Siobhán Coyle into the corner of the net. Fanad responded brilliantly and were back in the game within a few moments. Lauren Carr pointed a free and added two more from before the five minute mark to even the scores. The first three pointer arrived shortly after that. Lauren raced through the Naomh Muire full back line and fired a rasping shot into the bottom corner, giving the Naomh Muire goalkeeper no chance. Lauren added her fourth point in the ninth minute, steering the ball over the bar under serious pressure from the Naomh Muire defence. The Gaels fifth point came within seconds. The Naomh Muire kickout didn’t work and Hannah Shiels latched onto the stray ball before neatly landing a point with her left foot. Fanad were utterly dominant during this period, with Orlaigh Carr seeing plenty of the ball and Rachel Sweeney providing a constant option on the right wing. Maireád Coll and Eiméar Gibbons were on top in midfield with Maríosa Friel, Maggie Friel and Hannah Shiels taking it in turns to do the forward running. Rachel added the Gaels sixth point in the eleventh minute to open up a six point gap. Lauren Carr, again from a tricky spot pointed in the fourteenth minute before the lively Michelle Mc Devitt launched a ball into the square and it duly landed in the top corner of the net. Fanad were now 2:7 to 1:0 up and playing brilliantly.

The second goal seemed to wake the Naomh Muire girls from their slumber and they showed a lot of fight in the second quarter to pull themselves back into the game. A high ball into the Gaels square wasn’t dealt with and the Naomh Muire full forward Caroline Sharkey was on hand to bury into the net. She was a real handful at full forward and a great battle ensued between herself and Michelle Doherty throughout the game. Naomh Muire had other good opportunities but were playing against a stiff wind and that had an impact on their shooting. Siobhán Coyle also produced a super diving save to deny a certain goal in that period. Hannah Shiels was doing a good job in her sweeping role and both Aisling Howe and Niamh Mc Devitt cut out some dangerous opportunities as well. Clare Friel, stationed at full forward pointed the Gaels back on track with a good point before Naomh Muire finished out the scoring with two points of their own.

HT: Gaeil Fhánada 2:08 Naomh Muire 2:02.

Naomh Muire had the advantage of the breeze in the second period and began brightly, but their dominance of possession didn’t lead to any scores. Clare Friel put daylight between the sides again in the third minute of the second half as she powered past the Naomh Muire goalkeeper into the back of the net. Fanad seemed to retreat a little after that and although Lauren Carr scored a point, it was Naomh Muire who looked most dangerous, especially when they dragged the Gaels half back line out the field and kicked the ball in over the top. Their goal duly arrived in the eleventh minute, again from full forward Sharkey and that put six points between the teams. Naomh Muire pushed up, sensing more scores but didn’t make the most of their chances. Lauren Carr stepped up once more for Gaeil Fhánada, gathering a ball forty meters from goal after a stray Naomh Muire pass. She raced through the defence and stuck the ball in the back of the net. It proved to be a pivotal score as it took the sting out of the Naomh Muire revival. They tagged on another point to reduce the lead to eight but Aisling Mc Devitt got her name on the scoresheet to complete the scoring for the Gaels as she struck the fifth goal for the Fanad outfit. Naomh Muire hit three further points but never looking like getting the all-important goal opportunities they needed. Maggie Friel, Maireád Coll and Orla Mc Gonigle were to the fore putting pressure on the Naomh Muire attackers. They attacked and kept fighting right until the end but it was Gaeil Fhánada’s day and they weren’t to be denied.

Lauren Carr was immense for the Gaels and finished with a personal tally of two goals and six points but it must be noted that the other five forwards all got their names on the scoresheet from play as well. Hannah Shiels performed well in her free role, while Niamh Mc Devitt came to the rescue with a few vital tackles. Both Michelle Doherty and Maireád Coll had good battles with some of Naomh Muire’s key players but the whole team and the entire panel can be extremely proud of the achievement.

John Mc Conigley’s legend within the club continues to grow, and can now add the Ladies Junior title to the Intermendiate Reserve title he won with the men a few years back. Hughie Shiels who has been constantly involved since the team was formed will also take a lot of satisfaction from the victory. It was great to see the team and the cup coming back to Páirc Uí Shiadhail and they were presented to the crowd at half time in the Intermediate Championship game with Downings. They also called into the Parish League later on in the evening and there were great scenes when our stars of the future got their hands on the cup.

A new challenge lies in wait for the ladies, as they face into an Ulster Championship tie against Monaghan opposition in the form of Scotstown. It’s pencilled in as a home tie so there promises to be much excitement when Páirc Uí Shiadhail will host its first Ulster Club Championship game later in the month.

Comhghairdeas ó chroí le John, Hughie agus na cailíní go léir a bhí páirteach sa chuiche inné agus le linn na bliana go dtí seo. Thug sibh lá speisialta dúinn uilig!!!

Fourteen man Fanad ease to victory over local rivals Downings

Gaeil Fhánada 2-11

Downings 0-9

A mature display from Fanad ensured they kicked off their Intermediate championship with a win and also have bragging rights over their near neighbours Downings. A two goal haul by Michael Sweeney coupled with a solid defensive display laid the platform for an easier than expected win. Fanad were up against it as Seami Nanny Friel saw the line in the 15th minute while Eoghan Carr also received a black card at the same time for verbals directed at the linesman. Nanny can consider himself slightly unlucky as the yellow and black card incidents (which led to the red card) were much of a muchness as himself and the teak tight Eamonn Kelly clashed both times.

Conditions were poor for football as a swirling breeze made things difficult while a torrential downpour at the start of the second half didn't make things easier. Fanad were in the peculiar position of lining out young Mark McAteer as goalkeeper after Brendan Nanny Friel picked up an injury in the warmup. The young Kerrykeel man was assured particularly with his kicking. Downings were without the dynamic Danny McBride while Bryan McGinley was also injured.

Both teams started nervously with Fanad shading possession. The intensity of their tackling was clear to see while Downings struggled to warm to the task. Seami Nanny stroked over a free after Michael Sweeney was fouled. Five minutes passed before Sweeney opened his account after strong build up play by Jonny Nanny Friel. Downings, with the strong breeze at their back, finally got on the board on 11 minutes as Lorcan Connor swung over a free. Downings will be disappointed with their ball retention and decision making which was lapped up by the Fanad defence time and time again. Jimmy Coyle burst through for a fine score before Jonny Nanny saw two similar efforts go wide. Sweeney also fisted wide before the moment of controversy. Referee Marc Brown, who had a fine hour, dismissed Seami Nanny with a black card after a coming together between himself and Kelly. Seami had been booked minutes before for another coming together. Eoghan Carr also saw black for verbals directed at the linesman. Downings hit back thanks to a fine Connors free before Downings goalkeeper Brendan McGee got his bearings all wrong and his loose pass was smartly intercepted by Sweeney who rolled home to an empty net. This left the score 1-3 to 0-2 on 20 minutes and Fanad had their tails up. Fanad did fail to punish several poor kickouts before Downings responded with a fine score from Gary Ban. Connors then saw black for a clash with Fergal Friel before the curtain came down on the half as Niall Carr curled a free over from a difficult angle after Sweeney was fouled.

HT:

Gaeil Fhánada 1-4

Downings 0-3

Fanad won the throw in and launched a long ball into the Downings '21, Kevin 'Gooch' Gallagher misjudged the flight and the ball was collected and swung over the bar by Sweeney. Gary Ban curled over a lovely free before Mark Friel slotted over with his weaker left to push the lead out to five points. Again, Ban responded with a free before young Bernard McGettigan, introduced for Eoghan Carr, hit textbook 'Bernard points' on 40 and 45 minutes. James Lee McBride can consider himself lucky to escape punishment as what looked like a drag down on Coyle resulted in just a yellow, while two more aggressive fouls on Oisin Shiels and Paddy Heraghty went unpunished. Oisin Boyce pointed for Downings only for Ephrim McFadden to slot over a '45 after McGettigan had a shot blocked down. Fanad's next score was a goal of quality, Odhran Shiels got his hands on the ball and released Mark Friel on the Downings '45. Friel offloaded to Sweeney who jinked inside and tucked it under the advancing McGee to leave nine points between the sides. Downings started to increase pressure and managed to get two points from Keelan McGroddy and a free from Gary Ban. Paddy Heraghty, Conor McGonigle and Joe Blaney made some fine interceptions in between as it was clear Downings were struggling for ideas. Oisin Shiels boomed over while Brian McVeigh also got on the scoresheet after a strong direct run from the Portsalon man. Sweeney almost had his third goal but some strong pressure from Ben McNutt and McBride meant he skewed a weak effort wide. Young Padraig McGinty brought the curtain down on the game with a fine score against the breeze.

All in all, Fanad looked the hungrier on the day while Downings were lacklustre at times. Fanad had to deal with the distraction of losing their only goalkeeper while Jimmy Coyle also somehow came through a late fitness test despite a small hamstring tear. Aidan will be happy with the effort today and all focus moves to Aodh Ruadh.

For Downings, Lorcan Connor was effective until his black card, Gary Ban was dangerous and clinical from frees while Aaron McClafferty was causing plenty bother inside.

For Fanad, Sweeney's goals were decisive but it was really an all round team performance, young Fergus Friel, playing with a dead leg, put the shackles on the dangerous McGroddy, Odhran Shiels was back to himself, Oisin Shiels was calm and collected while Seami Nanny until his departure was influential. Mark and Jonny Nanny's workrate and effort were also of the highest order while inside Niall Carr was prominent.

Fanad's subs also got heavily involved which is an added bonus to Aidan and his backroom team.

U13 Girls

The U13 Girls continued their good start to the season with a comfortable win over Na Dúnaibh in Downings last Saturday. The Fanad girls played some excellent football and were in control for long spells of the game.

Overall it was a great team display from Gaeil Fhánada where everyone worked hard until the final whistle. It was also great to see a big crowd of Fanad supporters at the match to cheer the girls on. Well done to all involved.
