Veteran Burt hurler Ciaran Dowds picked up a remarkable 20th county medal in the one code last weekend.

The former Donegal hurler was introduced as a second half substitute as Burt reclaimed the title following a 3-14 to 1-14 win over defending champions Setanta.

Dowds won the first of his county senior hurling titles back in 1994 as Burt defeated Naomh Mura by 4-07 to 1-04 and went on to win 13-in-a-row before Setanta ended their dominance in 2007.

And the 41-year-old told the Donegal Daily that this one meant as much as the first title he won 24 years ago.

“We’re ecstatic to get over the line,” Dowds said. “The last two years were a big drought in Burt. (Mickey) McCann, ‘China’ (Paul O’Brien) and PJ O’Brien took on the job. We picked boys to take us the whole way. This is massive for the club. You see the young boys playing at half-time.

“They’ll remember days like this and hopefully it will bring them down the lane in Burt and push it on again.”

“It’s better to be in the mix. We knew at half-time, Setanta – the champions and with the quality they have – would come back. We steadied the ship and got over the line, thank God.”
