Derry defender Chrissy McKaigue is hoping the Oak Leafers can put together a run in the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers and “get playing decent opposition”.

Tyrone ended their neighbours Ulster championship hopes early with a 1-19 to 1-13 win in Omagh last Sunday and McKaigue is keen for the Division 4 champions to mount a run in the backdoor this summer.

“There is no substitute for games if you are trying to improve and hopefully we can get a run in the qualifiers and get playing decent opposition and we can improve as players,” the Slaughtneil star told The Irish News.

“Last year we played two teams in the championship who finished up in the Super 8s and we weren’t disgraced, we were competitive for large parts.

“It would be great to get a wee bit of a run this year and get game time as that is the only way that you are going to get experience at this level and hopefully we can get a favourable draw.”
