Derry manager John McEvoy and his assistant Johnny McGuirk have taken full advantage of the long journey from their homes in Dublin to Derry for training.

The duo travel up and down the M1 to Dungiven a number of times every week as they continue their preparations for the Christy Ring Cup.

McEvoy and McGuirk know each other well from their time with the Dublin under-21 hurlers.

The journey north can be long and arduous, but speaking to the Derry Journal ahead of their Christy Ring Cup opener against Down in Ballycran on Saturday, McGuirk revealed that the use the journey to get through a lot of work regarding the team.

“We get quite a lot of work done on the way up the road and the way back,” said McGuirk. “That’s the thing, when we were involved with Dublin you found that every day you were totally immersed in it. We were having to get work done through our own work. Even though we do plenty of work at home, through a day we would know that we have a certain amount of things to do but now we can park that because we know we can get that done in the couple of hour travelling.

“There would be times we have the laptop in the passenger seat analysing the game or phone calls back and forward and the journeys do go fairly quickly.”
