McEvoy seeks improvement

Derry hurling boss John McEvoy

Derry manager John McEvoy is in no doubt that his side need a big improvement in their performance if they are to turn around last weekend’s defeat to Wicklow.

The sides meet in the NHL2B final at Inniskeen on Sunday afternoon with Wicklow having beaten the Ulster side comfortably in the last round.

It has to be stressed that Derry were already through to the final, but McEvoy told the Derry Journal that the performance will not be good enough to win the final.

“We went into the game and we thought we had the best session on the Wednesday before it, then we went out and didn’t play well,” said McEvoy.

He added: “Wicklow are a fine side and they hurled us off the pitch in the first half last week. We will need to match them the next day in terms of intensity and hopefully we will do that.”
