Disciplinary Issues at recent games - 2 Like(s)
Leave it the County Board to sort out when they receive the referee's report. I am sure the minor board chairperson will step away owing to conflict of interest ?

Not sure what's going on with the forums but looks like all previous topics are gone and only a national forum remains. So this weekend's fixtures for discussion: Section A Fri: 8pm in Kinnegad: The Downs v Tyrrellspass Sat 4pm in Cusack Park: Garrycastle v Kinnegad Sat 4pm in Moate: Athlone v Lomans Fri night is a dead rubber. Interesting battle for 3rd and 4th place with 3 teams vying for 2 spots. Athlone need to beat Lomans to overtake them and Garrycastle need to win to be sure of a Q Final spot. Section B (All Sun 4pm) Cusack Park: Caulry v Moate The Downs: Rosemount v Killucan Lakepoint Park: Mullingar Shamrocks v Shandonagh Only 2 points separating top from bottom and everyone is playing for something.

Replying To WestmeathFan:  "If that is true that is shameful."
It is true. It was the 2nd round of the intermediate ladies championship group stage and Kinnegad won by 9 points in the end. It is a technicality and Kinnegad's own fault but I'm not sure every club would appeal it. When you get beaten fair and square on the pitch that's where you'd like to leave it. I'm not understanding the animosity towards the Caulry club though - I think most if not all clubs have a few mouth piece supporters. They just don't stand out to me as any better or worse than other clubs in terms of arrogance or verbals ?? From I distance I admire the work they are putting in at underage and developing their facilities. The seniors have reached the knockout stages of the SFC again this year and have a few lads on the county squad. Not sure about the size of their pick but seem to be surrounded by the likes of Moate, Rosemount, Tubberclair, Athlone, Maryland etc.

This the best I could get from someone that was up there: 1. Trevor Martin The Downs 2. Ciaran Daly Kinnegad 3. Charlie Drumm The Downs 4. Stephen McGonagle Tubberclair 5. Eoghan Bracken Kinnegad 6. Eoin Mulvihill Garrycastle 7. Darragh Seery Ballinagore 8. Jonathan Lynam The Downs 9. Adam Flanagan Tyrellspass 10. Jack Murtagh Milltown 11. Sam McCartan Lomans 12. Sean Fox Caulry 13. Aaron Nugent Castledaly 14. Tommy Ryan Tyrellspass 15. TJ Cox Lomans I see the county website is getting a rev up from Jan 6th. PRO could do with a hand - surely someone attached to backroom team or a parent could help. Look at Laois for example. All team lists well presented a day or 2 in advance. Photos from games. I see Laois minor squad for 2020 also published and they weren't even playing.

Senior & U17 Football Finals - 1 Like(s)
So the countdown is on to the biggest day on Westmeath's football calendar. In the U17, it's a repeat of last year's U16 Final between The Downs and Kinnegad. Tight one to call. The Downs have already won the U18 final and reached the semi of the U16. Kinnegad had an impressive win over a strong Loman's in the semi so anyone's game. I beleive it's a young Kinnegad team so I give The Downs the nod. Interesting senior final in store. All pressue on Loman's as favourites etc and nothing expected of Shamrocks. However that has been the case all along and Shamrocks keep proving so many of us wrong. For me it's their tigerish and pacy defence that has got them this far and could get them across the line. They have tightened up as the season went on and Fagan at midfield is flying. Despite the lads that are missing, Loman's still have top class performers and will be favourites. I just think that if Shamrocks keep their discipline and no silly cards then they could do the business.

Garrycastle best team from start to finish and very accurate while The Downs shooting was shocking. Yes a very poor start for them but they rallied before half time. However a sloppy 3rd goal after the restart meant it was game over. Second game was much better and fair play to Lomans for grinding out the win like they always seem to do. Flattered by the margin but stronger bench sealed the deal. Difficult conditions for both matches and no dressing rooms open. Didn't think the refereeing was great in both games but dont think it influenced the outcome although Kinnegad might think differently. Sets up an intriguing final with the best 2 teams.

Thought referee Keith OBrien did a great job in the senior final - allowed for the conditions and only blew when absolutely necessary. Always a good sign when the ref is not been spoken about post game.

Well if there is a plan, it certainly is not published. My own 2 lads were involved at younger ages. All age groups seem to operate totally individually - no obvious player pathway or joint up thinking. Initially at U13 level there was a panel of up to 60 players - playing 3 teams or so at blitzes. This number got culled over the winter without any notification - just stopped getting the texts. Another problem is getting mentors - seems to be just parents involved, certainly with the younger teams. Surely we could get some ex players involved even just as the lead coach and allow them to cut their teeth too. You need someone for the lads to look up to aspire to be and indeed attract the lads to play with all the competition out there.

Tickets for club matches only available online as far as I know - same website as last year - universe.com. I see there's a season ticket for €200 and i think there's a reduced season ticket for OAP's available in Cusack Park. I wonder if any games are going to be streamed on Iarmhi TV which was a great job last year ? Busy time for the dual player to get the first 2 rounds played - possibly 4 games in 10 days ? In fairness to the county board, they circulated 2 options depending on how Westmeath got on. The option that included WH getting to the Tailteann Cup Final is what is being implemented and did included mid week fixtures for round 2. Presume it's Leinster club that is dictating.

Just tracking some of the club leagues. Looks like Lomans v Kinnegad in the div 1 final - both unbeaten and drew when they met in the earlier stages. Presume both teams will insist on playing final with county players - will that happen after county are finished and before championship starts ? I believe The Downs have alot of injuries and some lads travelling as well as county hurlers. 3rd or 4th is respectable all things considered and no doubt the focus will be on retaining the Flanagan Cup. Shamrocks have been the surprise packet for me - have won 5/7 and also in contention for 3rd or 4th. Castledaly look in trouble and could be joined by Tyrellspass or Tang. Athlone flying high in div 2 and look good for a return to the top tier. Milltownpass currently in 2nd and looking good but will be under pressure from Tubberclair and Caulry. Killucan and Ballynacargy look doomed for the drop. In div 3, Lomans second string and St Malachy's look good for promotion with The Downs and Garrycastle in the drop zone.

Ended badly in Ratoath seemingly but not of his making I believe. Tale I heard was alot of outside interference in team matters.

Koo you are bigging up The Downs massively there. Potentially Lomans Athlone and Garrycastle would be in with a good shout too surely. It can vary from year to year depending on availability but you'd imagine numbers will be strong for the bigger clubs.

Full round of football league fixtures issued for this week. I think we are a week behind the master list as one weekend nearly all fixtures were off because of weather.

Garrycastle looked very good but Shamrocks were woeful. Just 2 scorers I think in Moore and Corroon,5 points from play and 8 in total (4 in each half). They will be happy to have got into group 1 and stay senior for another 2 years after having a very close call v Shandonagh. Had very little on the bench to bring on and Fagan's substitution looked strange as he was one of the few having a go. Such a poor display will leave a sour taste, will be interesting to see if Sheedy stays on.

Looking at the table looks like no matter what happens The Downs will top group 1. Group 2 too tight to call. Therefore as per planning report: Quarter Finals A. Team 3 Group 1 (likely to Lomans) v Team 2 Group 2 B. Team 4 Group 1 (likely to be Garrycastle) v Team 1 Group 2 Semi finals C. Team 1 Group 1 (The Downs) v B D. Team 2 Group 1 (Kinnegad) v A

Agree with previous posters - the players play as they are coached and directed so the issue is with management for sure. Likewise I have been following gaelic games for 30+ years and it was the worst game I have ever witnessed. I can now relate to Pat Spillane when he called it Puke Football some time back. The Westmeath PRO was spot on when he called it GARBAGE from both teams on twitter. Yes there was a gale blowing but how many scoring chances did Westmeath create, how many wides had they ? Very few. How many foot passes were directed to the forward line - again not too many. Thank God for Ger Egan, he kept WH in this game almost on his own. I expect WH to win replay as our key players surely can't play that badly again. Cost of replay tickets: €15 for stand, €10 for terrace and a fiver for U16's. I will be there !
