Leinster LGFA have announced that the Intermediate and Junior Leinster intercounty championships have been cancelled for 2020.

A provincial meeting was held remotely last week with the intermediate and junior championship joining the U14 competition, which was cancelled in Spring due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

There is still a desire and willingness to play the senior along with U16 and U18 provincial championships if possible later in the year.

Statement from Leinster LGFA

Leinster LGFA, following a provincial meeting held online last night, have unanimously agreed that in light of the current government advice and in order to ensure clarity for our adult players going forward the 2020 Leinster Junior and Intermediate Championships are cancelled. 

Leinster LGFA President Dominic Leech commented “This obviously was not a decision taken lightly by our full Leinster LGFA Provincial Council. However, in reality, it was felt the pressure placed upon players, clubs, mentors, county board and officials by scheduling our Leinster LGFA championships during the current climate of social distancing and government / HSE advice would be unfair."

"As Leinster LGFA are committed upon a policy of ensuring that club football is given the priority this year when football eventually hopefully returns it was felt that unfortunately, the time frame involved would not facilitate the completion of our adult championships. As Leinster LGFA President I am naturally disappointed that our championships will not take place but I certainly fully support the decision to safeguard our players, officials and supporters. I support making this decision at this early stage to bring clarity to all our members as early as possible.” 

In further clarification, Leinster LGFA have made no decision regarding the Under 16 and 18 competitions with those decisions deferred to June 8th. 

The Leinster LGFA Under 14 Championship together with the Leinster Under 12 blitzes have already been cancelled last month together with all 2020 Juvenile County Development Squads while a decision regarding the Leinster Club Championships has been deferred until later in the year. 

On a further positive note, Leinster LGFA are delighted to announce the appointment of Stephen Maxwell as Leinster LGFA GDO. Stephen, who will bring a wealth of experience to the role, will start into his new role from 1st June and we wish him well in his new role.
