No room for error states Cooney

Westmeath manager John Cooney is adamant that every remaining game in their NFL 3 campaign is important.

The Lake County are on three points from three outings and return to action after last weekend’s break with a clash against Laois at TEG Cusack Park.

Cooney has been pleased with the attitude of the players in his first couple of months, but he stressed to the Westmeath Independent now is the time to push on.

“All the games from here on in are important games because its such a competitive division. I was disappointed with the defeat against Down because we were in that game for long periods,” said Cooney.

“The players however cannot be faulted for the effort and dedication since we got together before Christmas. I think we were a little fatigued coming into the Down game.

“The lads had played a good few games with the O’Byrne Cup final thrown in the mix ahead of the league.

“I think the break in the league came at the perfect time for us. We used the break as an opportunity to help a lot of the players recover from knocks and niggles they picked up in previous games.

“I’m expecting a tough game against Laois. They had a great result against Down the first day, then Louth caught them on the hop and they easily defeated Sligo in their last game.”
