Is David Clifford The Best Footballer In The Country Right Now?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Replying To jimbodub:  "He has the potential alright and he's already proven as much already with seniors

For me he's up there as one of the best finishers currently available to Dublin and has another gear to him that we might see in the not so distant future

He has a cool head in front of goal. Scoring a goal late on to deny Na Fianna and another against Judes to win the game.

If he has another showing like that against Thomas Davis he'll be well up the list as player of championship"
Is he an inside forward, am I right in saying he played as a half forward for the U21's? Thought we would have seen more of him this year but presumably he will be more involved going forward?

Replying To jimbodub:  "Yeah the only "club football" thing

I remember well Diarmuid Connolly's All Ireland winning contributions being described as such

Funny how selective a person's outrage can be when it doesn't suit them

Congrats to David on an excellent performance

No doubting his talent

I remember Colm Basquel scoring 3-4 against an excellent Na Fianna side a couple weeks ago and 1-4 the other night to follow it up.

4-8 in two games

He doesn't get the same hype though..."
4:08 in two games is decent scorin n fairness although I think Clifford scored 4:04 in an all Ireland final a few years back. I was in Killarney yestrday and cliffords point scoring was unbelievable and from tight angles and under pressure as well. Tony Brosnan as well for the Crokes. And Brian Sheehan was a colosus .

Replying To catch22:  "Clifford is a good footballer a bit ahead of most of his age group and that's as far as it goes.
He's being hyped up like some sort of superman for that reason but at senior level he's a good footballer and nothing more."
I'm in shock. Now they've gone and given David Clifford ANOTHER All-Star! What are they thinking and he only a 'good footballer'....

I think we need a public enquiry here. It's a scandal. I suspect Russian interference in the voting.

Congrats to him

Glad to see his team mate was justly awarded ahead of him though

Only right after performing better than the best player in the country ;)

Handy gap though all of a sudden

Howard at half back ?!

Yeah great to see O'Shea get Young Footballer of the Year ahead of him alright.
So he must not be better than his team mate but still best player in the country.
Mmmmm

O Shea deserved it ahead of Clifford.
Think he was Kerry's best player this year.

Clifford has two All-Stars and a YFOTY and O Shea has one All-Star and one YFOTY. So by your logic Clifford is the better player then is he not?

My dear man the Topic refers to right now and not previously. O Shea was voted better than Clifford yet Clifford is supposed to be the best in the country whilst not the best in his county.
How does that work Einstein .???

Well, by your logic the All Stars and these awards are 100 % the Mark by which a player should be judged. If you have more All Stars and awards then you are better than a player with less awards. Interesting but daft logic.

Youre making a right fool out of yourself every time you comment on this thread fionn son

Its been made very clear that by 'best in the country' we are not talking about the last few games or even 1 season. Just when you take every footballer in the counry, Davids game is much more superior than anyone elses at the minute and certainly much more superioir than any dub at the moment.

Fionn, son, please keep making silly points and ignoring what i meant and how ive justified what i meant when i said 'best footballer right now'

I am not talking about current form which has been made clear many times. Dont worry wee man ill keep you on the straight and narrow

Clifford's YPOY and first AS happened 12 months ago.

It's as plain as the nose in your face that O'Shea had a far better year this year than Clifford.

Does that make O'Shea a better footballer than Clifford? Not necessarily!

Do your quotes stats make Clifford better than O'Shea right now? NO. They don't.

There are numerous footballers around the country, who are far better than either of these Kerry kids. Try Michael Murphy for example. Try Cluxton. And try Philly McMahon! Men who have walked the walk. Even try Kieran Fitz from Cofofin. And also Con, who has won AIs in both hurling and football. Has Clifford even even held an ash plant in his hand to direct an animal.

Being a 'great' player isn't just about being great at playing. It also involves being great at delivering. The examples I've given should show that.

Clifford might yet deliver. But until then, he might be considered as the most exciting or the most skillful, but he will certainly not ever be considered the greatest.

Let him at least deliver what Mossie Fitz delivered; 2 AI medals, and Fitz was a great. Not even the most begrudging of Kerry 'animals' can deny the hat; Maurice Fitzgerald was one of the greats of Gaelic football.

All the lads you've named have been playing intercounty football for 10 plus years so what your point?

'' And also Con, who has won AIs in both hurling and football. Has Clifford even even held an ash plant in his hand to direct an animal.''

What does winning a hurling All-Ireland have to do with anything i'd love to know? How could Clifford win one when he doesn't even play hurling?

Certain posters have, very wrongly, claimed that Callaghan is (like Ronaldo-manufactured), compared to Clifford (like Messi-natural). And those comments to that effect can easily be traced on HS.

Which is why I brought in the hurling aspect! It'd damn well hear impossible to create a hurler; manufacture one!
I've manufactured many's the GAA footballer around world.; it's way more difficult to do that in football!

My initial point was that Callaghan is a born natural in both sports. Certain Kerry posters have implied that he was not--just manufactured!

Callaghan is a natural in both sports!

I think the fairest comment about Clifford being the best footballer in the country at the moment is that he potentially is, along with several others. It is all about form. So far Clifford has shown real glimpses of greatness. Consistency is another issue. He needs to step it up a small bit, which he most likely will do. He disappeared for large parts of the semi finals and finals. I cant comment on the Kerry game v Meath, I didn't see it nor was it a do or die fixture.. He was a bit in and out v ourselves in the super 8 game. Great v Mayo in super 8s in Killarney.

Start this thread again at the end of next summer and it would be a better time to assess him.

Exactly.

At the moment Not
But definitely has the potential in the future to be, for sure.

Some posters just losing the run of themselves a bit at the MOMENT about him.

Time to move on to next topic now...

David scored 29 points in 7 championship games this year that's an average of just over 4 points per game .

David also missed the majority of the league due to recovery from an injury meaning he only managed to play 50 minutes in the last league game against Roscommon and the league final.

I think a good rest after next weekends county final and rest him for the first few rounds of the league and with any luck he could be back to full strength for next years championship and we'll see what he can really do,

Let's just say if he stays injury free he will be in the running for player of the year 2020.

The best footballer in the country 'right now'.

Minutes, days, months, this season, championship, last game, last inter county game?

What is the timeframe?

Clifford didn't play against Meath Donegalman as he was injured.

And he scored 5 points against Tyrone in the semifinal, he probably tried too hard in the drawn allireland which is understandable considering it was his first senior final but he still showed well for the ball and he really settled well in the replay.

David is only just 20 and he has 2 years of intercounty experience and 2 finals under his belt now and if he can stay injury free he'll be a very good player for us.

I would agree. Love to have him on our team, no questions about his ability, just the thread claims he is best in the country.

Any player would be audited ad infinitum if that claim were made about him.
