Replying To squareball2009:  "Club football in east Galway has seen a large decline over the last few years. Any club that is more than 30km from Galway city is struggling the exception been Mountbellew/moylough. Clubs like KC Glenamaddy Menlough Dunmore and St. Brendan's were decent senior teams not to long ago. Also disappointing to see is the rapid decline of Caltra. Ballinasloe too once a powerhouse in Galway football are now struggling in junior."
True, and much of this is down to demographics. Once you go further North or East of Mbellew-Moylough, you're going outside of the Galway city commuter belt. Yes there are plenty that commute to Galway from places like Glan, K-C, Williamstown, Dunmore etc but not in anything like the same numbers as areas within 25-30 min radius of Galway. The consequence of that is falling younger population and therefore player numbers. Primary and secondary school student population is declining in those parishes along our eastern and north eastern border - much of that real football country. Fewer young couples buy or build in those rural areas, as reflected in the national trend towards urban areas. What happens as a result is that teams must amalgamate like K-C and Kilererin together at minor grade, and the recent formation of new underage clubs like Northern Gaels (Glenamaddy, Glinsk and Williamstown). The quality of players is still coming through these clubs at underage but the broader player numbers just aren't there. The flip side of that is that those populous areas within the Galway commuter belt will continue to grow and will have to continue to push underage football in those areas, as Galway will tend to depend more and more on those larger clubs in the years ahead.
There's great work going on at grassroots and county underage right across Galway (3 minor finals in 4 years). With the right management, it'll translate to senior success in time.

Big win for o.ard, how breathnachs let that slip is beyond me, still feel they'll make the knockout stages and might be able to refind last years form.
I have a feeling aran, kilconly, oranmore, breathnachs, headford & o.ard will be very close this year.
2 up so plenty of motivation there

Well if the Breatnachs v Oughterard match is point in case of the West demographics and standard of football long may it continue. A great game of football and most definitiely a game of two halfs. Everybody and no doubt breatnachs themselves though they had this game wrapped up and in the bag at half time and them 7pts to the good. But what ever was said and what ever changes were made in the Oughterard dressing room should be bottled and sold. What a transformation Oughterard were a sight to behold as they blitzed Breatnachs in the second half. Young Tierney brother of Enda was incredible and deserves a call up to the Galway seniors on that performance.

Oughterard will by this standard have a serious shot at senior status this year. Breatnachs as well if they get fit and be able to last the hour which from what I say that were way of the fitness levels needed. Hopefully we will get more games like this in the championship and lead to standards rising across the county.

Good win for menlough very much needed. Aran are very 1 dimensional when they have the big lad in the square, easy to defend, all there scores came from their half forward line.
Prairie is a venue is very questionable, why couldn't it be a double header with the senior in pearse?

The Dunmore, Menlough, Aran, Cortoon group is very interesting. Cortoon & Aran would both have been tipped as serious competitors and after two rounds it stands Dunmore 4, Menlough 2, Aran 1 & Cortoon 1. Shows just how competitive the intermediate championship and how irrelevant league grades are.

Cortoon will continue to slide. They just dont have the players, Savo , Dave Warde still togging!
Sorry to see but they will struggle in the coming years.

Oughterard v caltra, good game caltra looked good yest, it'll show if oughterard are finally ready to make the step
Breathnachs with another tough test too.

Surprised by Aran had them tipped at the start but again their 1 dimensional when they start bombing balls in and easy to defend, not ready and won't make it for some time now

All good games, headford and oranmore for me, Gabriel's to drop

Aran were a bit unlucky. Especially to find themselves in relegation. Drew one game and lost two very tight games. Could easily have found themselves in the last eight but now have to battle the drop.
