Championship 2017 - 6 Like(s)
Hi guys, Just fancied reading through a few comments on here to get a general idea of how Monaghan supporters are feeling after Saturday. The few days after a defeat are always the worst (likewise the few days after a win are always the best), and there will be no one feeling Saturday's defeat more than the Monaghan players themselves. But, if anything, I just want to highlight that you really shouldn't feel as despondent are you are feeling. No one could have envisaged just how motivated, well-organised and disciplined (defensively) Down were going to be. To place Saturday's performance into context, that was the most complete performance I have seen from a Down team since we hammered Kerry in the All-Ireland Quarter Final in 2010. I'm still in awe of what I seen to be honest. I really didn't see it coming (did anyone?) I don't think Monaghan's season is over by a long stretch. Not only do you have a fantastic, level-headed, manager, but you have the players to challenge for an All-Ireland, I really do believe that. I'm just not sure the players believe it. Before Saturday, Monaghan were my favourites for Ulster. I think you would've beaten Tyrone in the final, and I still think your as good, if not better than them. There's a chance the qualifiers will give the likes of Jack McCarron the chance to express himself and his true qualities and to find his form. If you can put a run together and reach the All-Ireland quarter final, you'll be hard to stop with the momentum behind you. In 2010 Tyrone knocked us out of Ulster in the semi-final (it was a footballing lesson to be honest) and we went on to be a kick of the ball away from winning the All-Ireland. The momentum you gain from the qualifiers cannot be understated. Embrace it!

Tyrone. I admire their team, but their supporters are the worst winners. We have a word up north to describe them, slabbers.

County you least want to see win in football? - 4 Like(s)

Replying To IrishGael3:  "Yes - there's 4 or 5 common posters on these forums, who for some reason, have an unhealthy fixation with Tyrone. The thread could be about u12 Ladies Development squads in Leitrim and they come on and slag off Tyrone - it's quite laughable."
I wouldn't go forming an opinion on an entire county's support from a couple of posters on Hoganstand. Fairly naive. I've formed my opinion on experiences at matches between Down and Tyrone over many years. They seem to attract more slabbers than most. I'm sure supporters of other counties in Ulster can back me up on that. When they win they enjoy gloating. Likewise they seem to really enjoy beating Down, the gloating is immense. I'll take it as a compliment! And it's for this reason I get a cheap thrill when Tyrone are sent packing from the championship.

Down v Armagh - 2 Like(s)
I really don't know what is more satisfying. The result or the fact that a lot of Armagh supporters thought they only had to turn up yesterday. I listened to Aaron Kernan on the RTE GAA Podcast this morning and he sounds very downbeat. It was lovely to beat Armagh, however I thought that was the worst Armagh performance I have seen in a long, long time. We bullied them, we dictated play and to be honest, despite us only being a few points up for most of the second half, I never once left like we were going to let it slip. That was as complete a Down performance as I've seen in a long time. Much improved from the league. We actually looked very well coached. Shay Millar was outstanding, his workrate was first class. Considering the inexperience of the Down side vs Armagh's strongest 15, it was a very satisfying win. Armagh on the other hand looked all over the place at times, they lack pace and creativity in the final third. As for Down, we're in bonus territory and there will be no one in the county getting ahead of themselves. We're delighted to have beaten Armagh, but we know it'll be a massive ask to beat either Cavan or Monaghan in the semi-final. After the lows of last season Eamonn Burns and the Down panel deserve a lot of credit for their performance yesterday. It was a fully deserved win. An Dún Abú

Question for our Northern Brethren - 2 Like(s)
I believe partitionist mindsets within the GAA community have a more detrimental effect on our games than the unionist community both north and south could ever have. Just one small example. After the recent Round 1 Qualifier draw I read a tweet on twitter from a Longford supporter that read, 'Down V Longford 2 days after Brexit vote. Will we need passports to go to Newry for the match?'. The official Longford GAA twitter page retweeted this. Poor taste. The GAA has played a massive role in our country's national identity for over a century; particularly culturally and socially. I am proud of where I am from. I am proud to be a northern Gael. But, comments like this, regardless of how insignificant they might seem, can make us in the north feel alientated from Gael's in the south. They have no place in the GAA community. For us Gael's in the 6 counties, 'Brexit' is a realistic threat to our national identity. And, without turning this thread into a political debate, it is also a threat to the GAA community. Therefore I feel it is a topic worthy of mature discussion.

Down v Monaghan - 2 Like(s)
This game is set up nicely for Monaghan. The hype has settled after their defeat to Down, coupled with a 'poor' performance against Carlow. They couldn't have wished for a better draw to kick-start their season. Monaghan's games vs Wexford and Carlow were always going to be 'lose lose' situations. They absolutely pummelled Wexford and got no credit for it. Then they struggled over a very well organised and ultra-defensive Carlow side and people are saying that this Monaghan side are struggling and look poor. Monaghan are one big performance away from an All-Ireland quarter final and they will be delighted to have the chance to avenge for last month's defeat. Down on the other hand are hurting after a poor showing in the Ulster Final, albeit against a very good Tyrone side. We never really got going, but credit to the team in the last 10 minutes, they didn't throw the towel in and actually played some decent football. On paper I think this game is 50/50. This Down team is better than they have been given credit for, and perhaps this Monaghan side have been slightly over hyped (by no fault of their own). However, psychologically this game is probably 70/30 in Monaghan's favour. Everyone knows how difficult it is for the losing provincial finalists to recover to win their next match and for this reason I think Monaghan have the edge. If Down win this match, it'll be a much more impressive result than last month's Ulster semi-final in my opinion. Here's hoping. Hoping Down supporters travel down to Croke Park in their numbers. Let's get behind our boys in red n black! An Dún Abú

Cavan V Monaghan - 1 Like(s)
If Cavan want some additional motivation to beat Monaghan you should listen to the RTE GAA Podcast. Aaron Kernan seems to think Down are playing Monaghan in the Ulster semi-final with no mention of Cavan. I'm sure the Cavan players will have something to say about that next weekend. That said, he was also convinced Armagh would beat Down before throw-in yesterday...

Mayo v Tyrone - 1 Like(s)

Replying To IrishGael3:  "Think another Down fans mask has slipped - first of all you want to see the underdog win (not sure how you can ascertain that, Mayo most consistent team between 2 over past few years hence Tyrone possible underdogs) and now you say it's all about Tyrone being highly overrated - which one is it? Let me clarify it if you don't want to admit it - you hate all other Ulster teams doing well and especially Tyrone. This will be one hell of a game against 2 very evenly matched teams and it will be a great double header."
Haha! Happy Monday to you too. I ascertain that Mayo are underdogs by the bookmakers odds. This is where we get the underdogs and favourites tag for all sports teams, did you not know that? Tyrone are 8/11, Mayo are 6/4 with Paddy Power, thus Mayo are the underdogs regardless of how consistent they have been. As for my other post, if you haven't noticed, I was replying to the Mayo poster who with a pinch of salt claimed that Mayo are hustling and will ambush Tyrone. Judging by your eagerness to stick the boot into Down posters on here, perhaps your the one with the grudge. I really couldn't care less who win's this weekend. I'm expecting two great games and I hope the best team wins in both games. Finally, let me clarify, I don't hate all other Ulster teams doing well, as you suggest. For that matter I don't hate any GAA team. I love the GAA, I love watching the skill, intensity and that entertainment that county teams provide us with during the league and championship.

The Best Ulster side of the last 30 years? - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Thomas Clarke:  "Being very generous, I'd suggest that no more than 4 of those Down players would have made the Tyrone team in their 2003-2005 pomp, and even that is a push.

While he wouldn't have taken Jordan's no.7 jersey, I'd say DJ Kane could be accommodated at RHB. Ricey, Gormley, McMahon and McAnallen would have completed the defence.

Gregory McCartan was very talented though lacked discipline but, on talent alone, you could make a case for him over Hughes or McGinley.

In attack, Linden would be a certainty inside alongside Canavan and O'Neill, while Blaney would join Dooher and McGuigan in the half-forwards.

James McCartan, Ross Carr and Conor Deegan would have added depth on an otherwise all Tyrone bench."
Interesting point, however your bias is incredible to suggest you're being very generous in suggesting no more than 4 Down players from the double All-Ireland winning team would have made the Tyrone 2003-2005 team. To the four Down players you mentioned (DJ Kane, Greg McCartan, Mickey Linden, Greg Blaney) I would add: Neil Collins, a super goalkeeper. If it wasn't for some of his outstanding shot stopping we wouldn't have won any All-Ireland's in the early 90's. A crucial cog in the Down machine. James McCartan, for me he would've walked into the Tyrone team 03-05. The double All-Star winner had it all. Speed, skill, stamina and as strong as an ox. Wee James would run all day. A magical footballer. He would've been suited to the modern game with his speed and swerving runs. The point he scored vs Derry in 94 was out of this world. Jesus, imagine the damage him and Brian Dooher would do together in the half forward line. Ross Carr, an absolute unit in the half forward line. Scored 0-30 points in the 1991 championship. That stat alone is hard to look by! His free taking off the ground was first class. Big. strong, athletic. Ideal footballer for the 03-05 period. When strength mattered more than speed. Give me Ross Carr or James McCartan over Gerard Cavlan any day of the week.

What a shambles. We're talking about a national final which was live on television in one of the most modern stadiums in Europe. Not a junior B club match. I guess sometimes we can get ahead of ourselves. Things like this make us realise the GAA is actually amatuer afterall.

Replying To patk:  "That's his bad prediction for Ulster out of the way then!"
Haha! To be fair, I think yesterday's game was difficult to call, on paper Armagh looked stronger but in reality I always thought they were slightly overrated and couldn't get my head around why everyone was tipping them to beat us. As for next weekends game, Monaghan are favourites, but everyone knows derby matches between yourselves and Cavan are always tight affairs and I was really impressed with Cavan towards the end of the league. That said, I was so impressed with Monaghan against Dublin in the league. For years we've all been saying Monaghan are one quality forward short of challenging for an All-Ireland, Jack McCarron could just be that forward. Time will tell!

Congratulations on winning Ulster. There may have only been a few points in it but I felt you thoroughly deserved the win. You refused to lose when the game was in the melting pot in the last few minutes. I have to laugh at the media saying 'the drought is over for Tyrone'. If six years is a drought what on earth would you call Down's 22 years without success ha ha! I'm beyond despair with my own county. Tyrone will give the All-Ireland series a serious rattle. It won't be easy, especially with the likelihood of having to play a rejuvenated Mayo team in the quarters. But then again you do have arguably the greatest manager to ever grace the game. That coupled with a seriously talented squad is a potent combination. Keep the Ulster flag flying high.

Pete McGrath says "up the Dubs" - 1 Like(s)

Replying To sam2008:  "It is the football played in the Ulster Final that Pete should in aspiring to with his native county! He is living a pipe dream if he thinks he can get Fermanagh anywhere near the level of Tyrone, Donegal, Monaghan or for that matter Dublin. The money monsters that are Dublin, Kerry, Mayo, Tyrone etc will always be streets ahead of the now minor counties like Down - the only way to start getting back at these countries is to play defensive football. It is exactly this unwillingness by Down to change with the times that leads to them becoming a joke like some Leinster team!"
Kerry: 37 times All-Ireland senior football winners. Dublin: 25 times All- Ireland senior football winners. Everyone else: Minor counties. Don't fool yourself into thinking Tyrone are one of the big boys with your 3 All-Ireland's ffs.

Great result today!! Considering we were 1-6 to 0-5 down at HT the players could've easily let their heads drop, but instead they showed real spirit and fight to battle back for the draw and secure our division 2 status. Cork is not an easy place to get any kind of a result, so fair play to the players and management. Jerome Johnson started and finished with 0-5 (0-4 from frees), he made the difference. The Johnson brothers are a class act and should be the first names on the teamsheet. An Dún Abu.

Monaghan v Down - 1 Like(s)
Poor, clueless, lost, pathetic. Just some words used by previous posters on Down. This is simply where Down football is at this moment. Today was not really a surprise. No Down supporter really believed we could win. In fact, most feared the worst, and this materialised in the second half. For anyone who has watched Down this year, we knew today could happen. I felt immensely sorry for the Down players in that second half, not angry. They were hung out to dry. That 15 has never played county football together. Today we had around 7 debutants. Add to that another 4-5 of them with only 1 year of county experience behind them. Down were always going to be on a hiding to nothing. Who can blame the players for losing heart? The majority of these players have only ever experienced hammerings at county level. A lot of them will not recover from this season. It's a sad day for Down football. But it's a day that has been coming for a long long time. Pete McGrath was spot on, Down football is at its lowest ebb for 30 odd years. Heres hoping the darkest hour is before the dawn! An Dún Abú

Mayo v Tyrone - 1 Like(s)

Replying To redhanddefender:  "Of course you are bitter its laughable. at least most of the Down supporters have ad the sense to know other ulster supporters are on to them at this stage and stop trying to drive the boot in. And for the record I have nothing against down supporters but they are a bitter and jealous crowd! Does saying "and for the record I have nothing against....." here absolve me? You are as clear as day. And for the record, imo, if both teams play as they have done Tyrone will win. If Tyrone get ahead early Tyrone will win, but Mayo could do as tyrone have done in the past and spring a surprise but they will really really have to show something which lets be honest they haven't this year. Anyway 3 greats sets of supporters and the Dubs should make for a great night in Croker and not a DOWN man in sight as they will have their Dub or mayo shirt on! Heres to an Ulster 1,2!"
The only one coming across as bitter is you, and it's clear for all to see, therefore I don't feel the need to highlight it anymore. However, many of your posts are littered with sweeping generalisations. Your last post is the perfect example; 'most Down supporters...', 'Down supporters are a bitter and jealous crowd'. Then again, if the redhanddefender says so, it must be true. The fountain of all knowledge. '3 great sets of supporters and the Dubs'. This is all absolute nonsense. The Dubs have some of the most knowledgeable, polite and friendly supporters in the country. As for my bitterness and jealousy for Tyrone. This morning I sorted out my friend from Omagh with a ticket for Saturday, he finding it hard to get one. Bitter and jealous, eh?
