2016 Down U16 Hurling Championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Can anyone advise how this competition is being run this year please? It looks like there is an 'A' league and a 'B' league for the championship. Each division is made up of 3 teams (6 teams in total). Do the top two from each group go through to the semi-finals? Does each team play the other team twice (H & A)?

Group A
Bredagh
Carryduff
Ballygalget

Group B
Newry Shamrocks
Ballycran
Portaferry

Ballygalget went through the U16 league campaign undefeated so they look like the team to beat.

These are the groups for the A championship........St Patrick's, O Rahillys and CPN in the B championship.

It's going to be run in round robin in the two groups, top team in each group through to semi final and then the Q final is A2v B3 and B2 v A3......Ballygalget would be clear favourites, far and away best team in it

Add Clonduff to the Shield Competition (B Championship).. Top 2 go straight to final. That's minimum 3 games each for Shield and A Championship. In the A Championship top team from each group goes to semi and 2nd/3rd place teams play each other in 2 qtr finals for a place in the semi.. Looks like a good system

Clonduff have about 5 players....don't think they are playing in the shield despite being listed......hopefully they will but not sure that will actually happen

Ballycran wanted the game with us off due to lads on holidays. It will be refixed in the next week or so.

Ballygalget couldn't play Bredagh due to a lad away with County Minors to Clare. Not sure if it will be played.

Hard to see anyone beating Ballygalget in this based on league performances....maybe Bredagh IF they get everyone back.

Would have thought it would have been an idea to put the losing A q finalists in this into the shield/B competition as Carryduff, Ports, Crans and Shamrocks all will struggle to compete with top 2 in championship.

Fitness of key players at this age group is vital though 1or 2 lads missing can change a whole game

As expected our lads got a bit of a beating on Sunday.....missing a few of the older lads, only had 2 sixteens on field rest were u15 or below. Pheilm Savage more or less beat us on his own.......challenge here for Carryduff and Shamrocks is they can't compete really at this level but too good for what was left in the Shield.....

Still getting 3 games at this level is still better than walking through a B competition - thinks Crans play Portaferry tomorrow night in u16s in our group.

Ballygalget will be too strong for Portaferry. Ballycran and Bredagh will be tight
