Cavan97 you keep going to the matches . Your clearly an expert. In your opinion where did Flanagan play? Orthodox corner forward? To say we played 15 on 15 is just total bulls

Flanagan played the sweeper role. Anyone who was at the game could clearly see that

Anybody seeing the Cavan team with Flanagan at no.15 would know he was going to go into the back line... Hopefully they will show more will to get the ball up to the attackers more quickly and disgard the boring crossfield passing that went on last season.....

I for one dont care what style we play long as we get few mobile and unselfish forwards in. I hope to see more barry Reilly even if it means benching keating. Every team with execption of Dublin mayo play a massed defence. Lads asking for open football get real. Open football a quick track down to see longford and leitrim.

Good start lads without some of our more regular players and it was in Down's home patch so not to be sniffed at. Good to see Barry Reilly back playing as not only is he a good player but an excellent free taker ... wasn't at the match and heard he missed a few so was the weather a factor ..? We need a reliable free taker as we have been missing too many frees from what I seen last year. His free taking was brilliant in the county final so hopefully Sunday was just a blip. On another note its good to see the U21's starting out well but agree with one poster that Tom Hayes needs to be managed better (2 games in 2 days) the game against Kerry will show where we are at and our mcKenna game against Monaghan will give us an idea of our seniors. We need to hit the ground running in the league as its tougher with only 3 home games as well ... anyways things are looking bright

it's not just Tom hayes. I see Conor Madden played 2-days-in-a-row aswell.

Like him or loath him Joe Brolly is 100%r right as regards the treatment and expectations placed on amature players by PAID County and club managers... Time for the GAA to wake up but they allways seem to miss that call..!!'!'

Going by Peter Reillys comments in the celt I would imagine he will not play these lads who play two games in two days. He seems to want to rotate the players to have a look at everybody and rightly so. I agree that Tom Hayes is and will be an excellent forward but is a senior call up not a bit premature considering he wasnt even a regular starter for the u21s last year? Sure, he may have improved, but allowing him to concentrate on u21s is surly the right call at this early stage of the year.

Cavan seem to want to go all out and win the mc kenna cup again this year. Do you think this is the right idea as success can bring confidence? Or are we running the risk of not experimenting with new players and therefore not progressing long term? Last year after a successful run in the mc kenna cup and national league, we seemed a bit flat come championship time. We certainly dont want that this year when Monaghan come to town.

up to the players to stand up for themselves..if they weren't getting rewarded for playing county football, alot off them wouldn't still be doing it

I think the season has got off to a decent start. There seems to be a change of style from what I hear on the Northern S. commentary last Sun.It was repeatedly said that Cavan were kicking the ball forward much quicker and a lot less handpasses. Amazed to hear Jim Mc Corrys rant on Monday and sounds like he is trying to cover his a---.Sour grapes definately.

The news of Eugene Keating pulling out of squad is dissapointing but it could also be linked to moving club (Kilmacud Crokes) from St. Sylvesters after a year. There are a lot of rumours up here concerning the transfers of a certain Manager and other players. Also David Givney is playing with another top club up here Ballymun Kickhams. It begs the question and personally I would feel a bit of disquiet over all these high profile transfers.
Going back to the performances, I would agree with posters who say we should protect young players like Tom Hayes. A wonderful prospect and we should be careful not to burn him out. But we have loads of young players playing at a high level with the colleges and turning out for our u21's as well. The conveyor belt is still working and we should be optimistic for the future ahead.

No word of the team as yet for tonight. Anyone hear it? Hope a few new players are tried.

What a hammering the U.21's took today being beaten by 12 points by Kerry. I wonder what happened there.

Hopefully a bit more forward attacking play tonight,, it was a bit of an improvement last week in Newry, one thing i noticed was a couple of the players has still this instinct of turning and playing the ball back out field when opportunities of attack was on, I see by the line out of the team tonight that Ronan Flanaghan and Martin Reilly will probably be deployed as sweepers again, two things i noticed in Newry was that Cavan was too slow to let the ball into open space's to the forwards, and the lack of ability of shooting or taking a shot on from a distances ,good to see Enda Reilly in the line out hopefully he is let shoot, The year is early so hopefully tonight game shows another bit of improvement.

Very poor result this evening. However, the performance was even worse. The contrast between the ability of UUJ to play the ball into their forwards with speed versus Cavan's very laboured horizontal attacking was stark. Unfortunately it was the same last weekend, even against a limited Down team. It often looks like the FF line are unable to be out in front in a ball winning position when Cavan have the ball in the middle third. Obviously some of this is down to the fact that a two man FF line is played, but if the management are going to persist with this tactic then the two forwards need to start winning the ball in fornt and either turning their men or laying off to HF line/support players running through.

Overall a very very poor performance and the score flattered Cavan for UUJ were by far the better team.
They were unlucky against Monaghan conceding to soft goals. A lot of tall quality players on that UUJ team.
It would be safe to say Cavan have not improved one bit if anything they are just strangers slapped together to play a match like they never met before not that it would have made any difference last night.
Only for Martin Reilly's accurate free taking there was nothing nothing at all to talk about. It will be difficult seeing this Cavan team staying in Division two this year so looks like a lean/bleak year going forward.

Have to agree last nights performance was very poor but we will have players to come back for the league, killian Brady James mcEnroe Conor moynagh Niall McDermott fergal Flanagan would all improve the team along with a fit Martin dunne young Faulkner from kingscourt another to come in. All is not lost yet!

mowbar Just want to correct you. Monaghan blew UUJ out of the water last week when two howlers with ten minutes brought a 9 point margin down to 2 in the space of 3 minutes. Maybe UUJ improved but their defence was cut to piece by Monaghan's rookies. So Cavan need to start bucking up their ideas and fast.

yes I stand corrected shaggylegend.

No matter if then that Monaghan were so dominant what chance going forward has this below average Cavan team got. I read above players to come back if thats our hope of redemption I say dream on for they will make no difference.
