Dublin hurling manager Mattie Kenny and Dessie Farrell.

Dessie Farrell will “be very, very successful” in his new role in charge of the Dublin senior footballers, according to the metropolitans’ hurling supremo Mattie Kenny.

Farrell was involved with Kenny’s backroom team in the past year as a ‘performance coach’ so Kenny is well aware of the qualities that he will bring to the football dressing room.

Speaking to the Irish Independent following his team’s Walsh Cup win over Westmeath, Kenny stated: “A great guy; a great speaker; a great motivator; a very intelligent guy; got on really well with the players and the rest of our management team.

“I suppose we're a little bit disappointed that he's not with us in the coming year but everyone in the management team, every one of the players, is delighted that he's taking on this new challenge now.

“With his experience and his credentials, and what he has achieved as a player and in his managerial career so far, it's a challenge he's going to be well able for.

“He's going into a highly motivated squad and I'm sure Dessie, while maybe not changing them much, and I'm sure they'll be very, very successful.”
