Winning a first county title in 33 years means that Borris-Ileigh can play with freedom in the Munster club SHC, according to full back Paddy Stapleton.

The club have been through a lot over the last 12 months with a number of deaths to young people including Stapleton’s sister Amanda through illness, hitting the community hard.

The former county star admitted to the Tipperary Star that it had been a tough time for all concerned in the lead up to the final.

“Amanda, my own sister was on my mind all day and all week – five people have passed away tragically since last August and it was heavy on the heart to be honest,” said Stapleton.

“I felt like we had 20 on the field today. I never believed in coincidences before but a lot of crazy stuff has happened in the last few days so it has been a very weird week in that sense. It’s very hard to explain.

“We can go and play with freedom now and play with abandon against Glen Rovers. The pressure is off a bit now and we know that they are a very good team. They have a few star players but when the monkey is off your back you can go out and enjoy your hurling and drive on.”
