Fitzgerald happy in new role

Switched from wing back to centre forward seems to have worked a treat for Clare’s David Fitzgerald.

Last weekend, Fitzgerald was outstanding in the centre forward position as Clare defeated Wexford in an entertaining clash at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

At the moment, it looks as if Clare manager Brian Lohan has pulled a masterstroke by playing Fitzgerald there and although it is early in the season the defender turned forward is delighted to be just starting.

“I’m happy wherever I’m played, really,” Fitzgerald told the Clare Champion. “I played in the forwards a small bit underage with my club, but it is a new role for me. It’s a new experience and I am enjoying it at the minute.

“Going down to Wexford was primarily about getting more game time for players. That is going to be the sole focus of the league, to build it up for the championship. The win is a huge bonus for us. Coming down here it is a bit of a fortress but we won’t be getting carried away with anything, as there is a lot of hurling to be played for the rest of the year.”
