Brian Lohan looks set to become the next Clare senior hurling manager after his only rival for the position Louis Mulqueen withdrew his candidacy.
Mulqueen was a key figure when the Banner County delivered their fourth Liam MacCarthy Cup success six years ago.
The St Joseph’s Doora-Barefield clubman, who is busy preparing Liam Mellows for a Galway SHC semi-final this weekend, revealed his decision via a statement released by Clare GAA tonight:
“This week I am concentrating on the Galway Club Semi Final.”
It has been an honour to have been nominated for the position of Clare Senior Hurling manager and I am grateful for the overwhelming support and good wishes coming in from all sources.
I now, after careful consideration have decided that I am currently not in a position to allow my name to go forward. I wish the new manager and Clare hurling all the best.
Regards,
Louis Mulqueen.”

It leaves the path clear for two-time All-Ireland winner Lohan to succeed outgoing joint managers Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor, with the former having dropped out of the race to become sole manager a fortnight ago.
