Davy Fitzgerald was impressed with what he saw from his native Clare in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

The two-time All-Ireland winner and his Wexford team exited the Liam MacCarthy Cup race after finishing on the wrong end of the 0-27 to 1-17 scoreline in today's quarter-final.

"The best team won on day, no doubt about that, we can have no complaints," he conceded when speaking to RTE Sport shortly after the final whistle.

"I have to say, in fairness to the Wexford lads, they battled very hard. I don't think we played our best today, there's a lot more in the lads. They'll be disappointed but, you know what, they kept trying and trying. I think we had a few bad wides when we got back into it there which probably didn't help us.

"But, you know what, I can't fault them. Fair play to Clare. It's unusual to be on the other sideline from them but they did well today. They got to keep trying to play the way they played today, short and move and give and score. It's working for them."

Davy went on to say that he expects the Wexford players to bounce back in the years ahead but what about his own future - will he return for a third year at the helm of the Model County?

"The game is only finished about 10 minutes!" he laughed when that question was put to him. "I'm just knackered after today.

"But I have to commend Clare again, I thought Clare were fantastic. I wish the boys all the best of luck."
